ORGANELLES FUNCTION
Nucleus It is the command center of the cell.
Ribosomes It carries out protein synthesis.
Peroxisomes Vesicle that is involved in fatty acid metabolism.
Mitochondrion Organelle that carries out cellular respiration, producing ATP
molecules.
Central Vacuole Large, fluid filled sac that stores metabolites and helps maintain
turgor pressure.
Plasma Membrane It surrounds cytoplasm, and regulates entrance and exit of molecules.
Cell wall Outer surface that shapes, supports and protects the cells.
Chloroplast It carries out photosynthesis, producing sugars.
Cytoplasm It is the semifluid matrix outside the nucleus that contains organelles.
Golgi Apparatus It processes, packages, and secretes modified proteins.
Microtubules Protein cylinders that aid movement of the organelles.
Endoplasmic Reticulum It metabolizes both protein and lipids.
Centrosome It is the microtubule organizing center.
1. What structure surrounds the cell membrane (in plants) and gives the
cell support?
Cell wall.

2. Name three structures found in plant cells but not animal cells.
A – Onion Cells
View under the microscope and sketch the cells at each magnification. Label the cell
wall, nucleus, and cytoplasm as they appear under high power.
B – Elodea Cells
View under the microscope and sketch the cells at each magnification. Label the cell
wall, chloroplasts, and cytoplasm as they appear under high power.
