I. Synthesis
There are 14 "national" daily broadsheets and 19 tabloids published in Metro Manila.
The overall circulation of these periodicals in a country of almost 75 million people is
estimated to be around 7 million. In Filipino, just two broadsheets, Kabayan and
Numero Uno, are published. The illustrated komiks remain the country's most popular
reading material. The Philippine Press Institute developed the Journalists Code of Ethics
(PPI).
Unfavorable reporting is considered part of the press's "watchdog function," and libel
trials (and ad boycotts) are serious threats to press freedom. Many journalism
departments or institutions do not have electronic laboratories where students may be
trained in desktop editorial abilities. Given the country's small population of Internet
users, the threat of advertising shifting to the Internet remains remote in the
Philippines.
