Title of the Lesson: The Print Media: A Tradition of Freedom (Part II)

I.            Synthesis

There are 14 "national" daily broadsheets and 19 tabloids published in Metro Manila.
The overall circulation of these periodicals in a country of almost 75 million people is
estimated to be around 7 million. In Filipino, just two broadsheets, Kabayan and
Numero Uno, are published. The illustrated komiks remain the country's most popular
reading material. The Philippine Press Institute developed the Journalists Code of Ethics
(PPI).

Journalists must "adhere to careful" reporting or interpretation of news, according to

the Code. Some major publications have opened full-time news bureaus in major cities
around the country. Malnutrition, lack of access to preschool and primary health care
stories still need to be covered more widely and consistently. Tabloids have been
criticized for publishing front pages with half-naked "celebs'' in provocative poses.

Philippine Press Institute offers a dozen training courses on different elements of

newspaper publishing, including editorial, management, and ethics. There is a need to
enhance both compliance and self-regulation systems. The use of computers
necessitates retooling among editors, journalists, and production personnel. Some
professions, such as paste-up, may ultimately have to be phased out when machines
take over the work to be done.

Unfavorable reporting is considered part of the press's "watchdog function," and libel
trials (and ad boycotts) are serious threats to press freedom. Many journalism
departments or institutions do not have electronic laboratories where students may be
trained in desktop editorial abilities. Given the country's small population of Internet
users, the threat of advertising shifting to the Internet remains remote in the
Philippines.

II. Learning Impacts (Explicate the learning impacts of the material in each area or,
aspect below.)
A. Personal

Learning about these resources can help us become more aware of the print
media and provide us with a basic understanding that we can utilize if we
decide to pursue journalism.

B. Academic

As students, we need to learn about these facts in order to be more aware of

the media business because it’s information that we can keep with us
throughout university.

C. Cultural

There is a brief history of print media that helps us create a much better
knowledge of print media. Moreover, despite the growing number of regional
media outlets, other cultures, such as the Igorot's, are still not seen as
significant as NCR news.

D.   Social

Journalism serves as a link between the people and the elites; by being
aware of the condition in other groups, such as the Muslims in Mindanao, and
having understanding of print media, we can assist produce more articles
about their experiences.

III. Feedback and Reflection

This information, in my opinion, should be updated. More researchers are needed to

investigate these issues. I believe that television and other new media have surpassed
newspapers. Most people nowadays have a smartphone, which is instantly available and
all we need is an internet connection, but the newspaper is still superior because there
is a lot of bogus news online. However, marketers are more prevalent in various types
of media than they were previously. Journalism is still as vital now, if not more so;
because of people's diverse interests, 21st-century talents are in high demand.
