ME302: Materials Mechanics: Class Introduction Chap. 1 Stress

Lecture 1
Class Introduction
Chap. 1 Stress (1)
Failure
Crane
Pad
Bearing pads
Supporting mat
When cranes are supported using bearing pads for their stability, a large stress is developed
between the pad and the supporting surface.
• How can we ensure that the supporting mat is not crashed by the compressive stress?
Wheel Force
Shaft
When we rotate a wheel, the shaft attached to the center of the wheel is subjected to a
torque developed by the force applied to the wheel.
• How can we design the wheel and the shaft ensuring that the maximum stress
developed in the shaft must be resisted by the shaft and prevent any failure?
Course Overview
(1) Define Stress and Strain Chap 1,2
(2) Describe the stress-strain curves of different materials Chap 3
(3) Stress-strain behavior under different loadings and combined loadings
Chap 4-8
(4) Stress/Strain Transformation Chap 9-10
(5) Deflection of Beams and Shafts Chap 12
(6) Buckling of Columns Chap 13
• Chapter Objectives
Understand the concepts of normal and shear stress
Analyze and design of members subjected on axial load or shear
Equilibrium of the Deformable Body (1.2)
(1) External Loads
(a) Surface Forces : caused by the direct contact of one body with the
surface of another
Distributed
Concentrated
Load
Force
FR
(b) Body Forces : developed when one body applies a force on another body
without direct physical contact.
ex) the earth’s gravitation/ electromagnetic field
(2) Support Reactions
• Reactions : the surface forces that develop at the points of contact between
bodies.
• If the support prevents translation in a given direction, then a force must be developed
on the member in that direction.
• If rotation is prevented, a moment must be applied on the member.
Answer:

(3) Equations of Equilibrium
• Equilibrium of a body
a balance of forces and a balance of moments.
ΣF=0, ΣMO=0
ΣF = the sum of all the forces acting on the body
ΣM = the sum of the moments of all the forces about any point O
ΣFx=0, ΣFy=0, ΣMO=0 * All the moments are summed about point O and
so they will be directed along the z axis
(4) Internal Resultant Loadings
