Question 1:

a) A solid of mass 50g at 150°C is placed in 100g of water at room temperature; the
temperature is measured instantly after placing the mass and is measured to be 86oC when
the final temperature is recorded it was 20°C. Find the specific heat capacity of the solid.

Question 2:

a) The specific heath capacity of a solid at temperatures close to 0 K is given by c = kT3 where T is the
temperature and k is a constant characteristic of solid. Find the heat required to raise the temperature
of such a solid of mass m from a temperature of T1 to T2. [4 Marks]
b) Light from an electric lamp P has spectral distribution shown below

Draw a graph that represents the spectral distribution of light from a lamp Q which takes the same
input power as lamp P but operates at higher temperature. Give reason for your answer. [4 Marks]

Question 3:

A block of copper of mass 0.5 kg at initial temperature of 350 K is placed in 400g of water at room
temperature. When thermal equilibrium is attained, the temperature of the mixture is 35o C. How much heat is
lost by the copper block and how much heat is absorbed by the water? Comment on your answer.
