Today, we are going to discuss a
“Korean Folktale: The Vanity of the
Rat”. It focuses on the formerly
custom of Korea wherein the parents
are responsible to arrange their
children’s wedding.

C. Reading
I have here a hidden series of pictures, try to
guess the story as I remove the pieces of
paper as we discuss, for us to form the story
through the use of pictures.

A long time ago, there lived a rat couple who

had 1 daughter.

Since they had no other children, they gave

her everything. When it became time for their
daughter to marry, they wanted only the best
husband for her. They thought about all of the
rats that they knew, but none of them were
good enough for their daughter.

One day, Mr. Rat told his wife that the perfect
husband for their daughter is Mr. Sun.

What do you think is the reason of Mr. Rat

why did he chose Mr. Sun to marry his
daughter?
Ma’am
Yes, Cielo?
Because Mr. Sun is powerful and bright.
Okay, then Mr. and Mrs. Rat asked Mr. Sun
to marry their daughter. Did Mr. Sun accept
their offer?
No.
Mr. Sun did not accept their offer instead he
told them that there is still someone who is
very powerful than him and that is Mr. Cloud.

What is the reason why Mr. Cloud is

powerful than Mr. Sun?
Ma’am
Yes, Irish?
Mr. Cloud can make Mr. Sun powerless
Now, after hearing those words, they climbed through covering him.
up a nearby mountain to meet Mr. Cloud.
They asked the same thing to Mr. Cloud. Did
he accept the offer?
No.
Okay, he did not accept the offer but instead
he suggested someone who is powerful than
him and that is Mr. Wind.

How come Mr. Wind is powerful than Mr.

Cloud?
Ma’am
Yes, Aj?
He is powerful because whenever he blows,
Very good. the clouds must go away

What do you think happened next? Any

guess?
Ma’am
Yes, Franco?
The two found Mr. Wind and asked him the
same offer they are asking to Mr. Sun and Mr.
Okay, good. Cloud

Did he accept the offer?

No.
You’re right. He did not accept the offer and
told them that there is still someone who is
powerful, because even though he blows as
strong as he could, still he cannot make a
stone Buddha move.

Then they talked with Mr. Stone Buddha and

offer the hand of their daughter in marriage
but Mr. Stone Buddha did not accept the
offer.

But the stone Buddha said that there is still

someone who is stronger than him. The two
are very excited to hear who it is. Then, the
Stone Buddha told them that rats or the moles
are stronger than him because they can
burrow under him that can make him fall over
easily. After hearing those words, they
thanked the stone Buddha.

After the long search for a suitable suitor, the

rat’s daughter married a rat.

That is the Korean Folktale; The Vanity of the

Rat.
