1. Why was C.S. Lewis very much a skeptic and critic of scientism? Was he against science?

C.S Lewis was against the idea of scientism. C.S Lewis sees scientism as bad, corrupted and dangerous. C.S
Lewis is very against the idea of science being idolized because it abuses the purpose of science and the
scientists.

2. How did C.S. Lewis explain the following: a. Science as religion, b. Science as credulity, c. Science as power

a.) Science can be used as a religion for people who do not believe in God. Science can also be substituted
for a religion because it gives a viewpoint and reason in life.
b.) Science should not be questionable and science should be believed in. When a fact has been proved by
science, people should believe it.
c.) C.S Lewis sees that science maybe comparable to magic but something makes science scarier. This is
the fact that science can take control over the world. Science is also attempting to create a new age in
which science will be viewed as a “savior”. This idea is called science utopia.

3. Why did C.S. Lewis think that modern science is far more dangerous than magic?

C.S Lewis thinks that modern science is more dangerous than magic because science is a reality while magic is
not. C.S Lewis also thinks that science can be used as a medium to take over and control the world. Another
fact is C.S Lewis saw that science can accumulate power and eventually be an idea which all people will
believe.

4. Why did C.S. Lewis become increasingly concerned about the rise of scientocracy? How does scientocracy
relate to scientism?

C.S Lewis is concerned about the dogmatic use of science. Scientocracy is the idea that science is used for
everyday thinking and that it must become a norm for societies using scientism as their basis for facts, beliefs,
and actions. There is the rise of so called experts who dictate people in the name of science and that many
governments and society that claim to be based on modern science but in reality is made up of people who
claim to speak for science and express their right to rule based on scientific knowledge and ideologies

5. Based on what you learned in the documentary film, how does scientism pose a threat to the human person
flourishing in science and technology? Why should science be guided by an ethical basis that is not dictated by
science itself?

Scientism poses a big threat to the human person flourishing in sts. Why? It is because it can can easily dictate
human actions and change their beliefs. I t limits a human’s capability to think beyond the known science.
Human flourishing is about the progress of people and science ideologies must not interfere with the natural
flow of human improvement. Science should be guided by ethics too because it is also a human construct that
is susceptible for errors and abuse. A concession is that it gives a sense of power and that the attitude of
humans is that they do not get contented and as long as they can get and have something, they will not stop
getting it. An ethical basis not science based but should be morals and basic human reasoning that should be
used as a guide in order to hinder the negative side of science and to increase the capacity of living and
eventually have science as democratic and not a dictating human construct
