The Magician's Twin: C.S.

Lewis and the

Case against Scientism
Scientism is an exaggerated trust in the efficiency of natural science applied to all
areas of investigation. Lewis thought that modern science is in fact was far more
dangerous than magic, because magic failed and doesn't work at the end of the day.
People couldn't use it to control the world, while modern science has the potential to
control the people. Lewis is very concern by the dogmatic use of science. That is why he
wrote his book, “The Evolution of Man”, where he actually worries and predicts the rise of
new class of people of expert speaking in the name of science.
He is concern about authoritarian science that seems evilly prophetic. In a world
driven by science and technology, those who question the new order like Clive Staples
Lewis did increasingly find themselves labeled as Anti-science. He didn't accept that idea
that the science was a special form of knowledge that is somehow immune to an
inspection and he didn't deny that the scientific expertise might be necessary for good
public policy in many areas but he insisted science alone is not sufficient. CS Lewis
thought that science was a good thing but he also thought that it helps some really
strong dangerous. The biggest danger was really the passion how to control.
So what do scientists need for science to be good? What should the community do
for it to remain good? Lewis thought that turning impulse was really a dangerous thing.
Lewis was frightened by the potential of science that is why he addressed why we really
need a way to understand the limit of science and that there is something behind
science.

Science is a brimming magic, as we all saw in the experiment that only science can
delineate. It is an oppo of magic — wherein magic can explain what science is and what
it can do to our daily lives and to our society. In the video, it was stated that science is
the only one thing that can save us now — I agree, because it is humanity's way of
understanding the universe, it allow us to predict the consequences of our actions and
ultimately enhance our lives, because science help us to make our lives better. Better
understanding of science is all about understanding evidences. Through scientific
process, it also allows us and the society to make rational and proper decisions.
Definitively speaking, atheist is a pure science relief in science, wherein gods or deity
does not exist, but it also said that it is illogical or not showing good judgement. C.S
Lewis compared science to magic in three ways: first is Science as Religion, second
Science as Credulity or the willingness to believe as something and third, Science as
Power, which it controls and make our lifestyle comfortable and easy with different use of
science in mechanical work, medical and etc.

Science has good and bad effects. The biggest threat of science is how it controls
people, because scientific knowledge can make people believe anything what science
defines. It has something to do with people that use their knowledge to dictate other
people’s lives.
Science and technology is contributory to the damage in our society and its
increasing control of our lives. Compared to magic, modern science is way, way more
dangerous because according to Lewis, if you find the right drugs you can simply control
others to let them follow your orders. Based on my observation and experiences, in
some ways science can be of big help in the development of society. Like for example
the invention of computers. Computers let us do or know things easier and faster. We
can easily access educational sites that can add knowledge to students like us.

1. According to the film, how is science being likened to a religion? What were examples of
movement in history that became cause for concern that the scientific method was being
applied beyond its appropriate boundaries?

It is no wonder that science is very important to the rest of the society. It is a

knowledge that is very helpful, very powerful that in a click of a finger it may all be
twisted, it may all be reverse. The one we expect to help can be the one to cause us
danger, the one we expected to be good and cause good, in the wrong hands can be
bad and can be the source of evil. So what do scientists need for science to be good?
What should the community do for it to remain good? Limitation. Realization. And
Decision.
Everything has its limitation. Science is known to push through, persevere and give
us breakthroughs, disseminating new knowledge and new level of satisfaction. But it is
never free. Science has its own limitation that it should never cross. As the presentation
said behind science is life. Science will only remain helpful, will remain good if everything
aside it is also respected and there is no ethical and moral value being neglected, after
all everything in the universe must co-exist.
Science is here and there but it is not everything. People be it scientist or ordinary
citizen should realize this. Science is not everything so we should stop relying and
depending purely on it. It is not the only knowledge and truth there is. It is already time to
open our blinded eyes and to see the world not just in the perspective of science.
A good decision is what will lead us into action. What comes first? Is it knowledge or
is life? What is right and what is wrong? Are scientist going to save the world or should
they first save themselves from scientism? Are people going to let themselves be
dictated by the rules, ways and life of science? People should now let their voices be
heard on the matters about science that have been kept for so long. We should now
decide on what is good and right, not for science, but for everyone. A way to make and
how to bring back science respecting human rights and dignity. A science far away from
being considered the magicians twin.
