The study of science, technology and society (STS) is an interdisciplinary investigation of the relationship
between scientific progress and societal forces, and the role of technological innovations in both.
Science influences society through its knowledge and world view. Scientific knowledge and the procedures
used by scientists influence the way many individuals in society think about themselves, others, and the
environment. The effect of science on society is neither entirely beneficial nor entirely detrimental.
Technology has advanced into many areas of our lives, making information more accessible, improving
communication, changing transportation, and the list goes on. While it is easy to sit back and benefit from a
plethora of technological advancements, it is crucial we do not become blind to its effects on society.
The essence of how science and technology contributes to society is the creation of new knowledge, and then
utilization of that knowledge to boost the prosperity of human lives, and to solve the various issues facing
society.
