Strength of Materials Fall 2020
Upload the entire completed exam on Blackboard Learn as one pdf document. You are
not required to print this exam; if you do problems on separate paper, please do only one
problem per page, and write out and sign the honor agreement on the first page. Show all
necessary work in a neat, logical, and orderly format. Use complete free-body diagrams
when appropriate. Box final answers. Problems are weighted as indicated. Exam should
have 5 pages (including this cover page). Exam is open-note, but closed internet (other
than Blackboard). 100 Points possible. Write the last three digits of your student ID
number (“LDI” for short) at the top of each page (worth two points).
Honor Statement:
information regarding this exam, nor will I share unauthorized information regarding this
exam with anyone, including students in other sections. I acknowledge that sharing
unauthorized information regarding this exam is cheating. Cases of cheating will result in
a score of zero for all parties involved, without exception. Further disciplinary action may
also be taken.

1. [18 pts] The statically determinate beam ABCD has a hinge at C and moment
equations for the three regions of the beam; M1(x), M2(x), and M3(x). Imagine you are
to compute the slope (y’) and displacement (y) of the beam using the direct integration
method:

2. [15 pts] The built-up beam shown is made by gluing together two 20 x 250-mm
plywood strips and two 50 x 100-mm planks. For a vertical internal shear force, V (see
below for the value of V), determine the average shear stress in the glued connections

3. [27 pts] The stress state for a piece of material is depicted below. Compute the
following using Mohr’s circle (additional space and axes for drawing Mohr’s circle are
provided on the following page):
(a) [5 pts] Maximum normal stress.
(b) [7 pts] Orientation of max normal stress relative to the x-axis (indicate number
of degrees and direction you need to rotate from the x-axis).
(c) [5 pts] Maximum shear stress.
(d) [5 pts] Maximum shear stress, if there is also a 100 psi compressive stress
acting in and out of the plane shown (i.e. in the z-axis direction).
(e) [5 pts] Rotation(s) to get to the maximum shear stress from part d (indicate
rotation angle and axis in your answer).

4. [40 pts] For the specimen shown, determine the normal and shearing stresses at point
H. Do not find principle stresses or draw Mohr’s circle (just the unrotated stress state is
all I am asking for)!
