From the conversation above, we can see that Mr Jones is asking for direction to

get to Mrs Norris’s home. We can see the way mr Jones askes about the direction. There

are many ways to ask direction, but in this section, I will provide the most common ones.

In addition, we may take a look at the way Mrs Norris giving the direction. Firstly ahe

started the directing by explaining the way to get to her home, then she drwas a map to

make the explaination clear.

In giving direction, we may use oral explanation to show the way to people. But, it

will be better if we use or draw a map as iluustration to make sure that people who ask

you understand the the way. It’s purposed to give them overview about the way they will

pass through.
All of these examples would give us an answer about the path or course we should

take. However, the response would probably include instructions about how to follow the

directions. For example “How do I get to …” – This is the simplest way to ask someone

for directions. When you use this phrase, the other person will either tell you which mode

of transport (bus, underground) to take or will explain your route. The point is when we

ask for direction we should have good attitude and be thankful to people who give us

information.

After you know how to ASK for directions, but what happens when an English

speaker asks YOU for directions. This is not a time small talk. Give only basic directions

with short phrases. Giving simple direction will help people who ask you understand the

way easily. You just need put some addition after giving each path. Fro instance, “when

you meet first traffic light, then turn left into Sudirman Street”. The point is we should

turn left into Sudirman street with traffic light as the addtion to make it understandable.
With purpose of giving asking and giving direction, recognizing the name signs in

English is important as well. We use signs to make the direction more comprehensible. For

example, we may use traffic light as the branchmark of our direction. You may turn left

after second traffic light into Sudirman Street. By using traffic light as the branchmark, the

user will get to the place more accurately. Thus, it’s important to know the name of signs

in English because it will hel you as people who give or ask for the direction.

Prepositions are words that are used to link a noun or phrase to another part of the

sentence. Some examples of prepositions are “between”, “opposite”, “st the corner of” and

“next to”. You will find them used in lots of different ways and various contexts. The most

common ways to use prepositions include using them to indicate time, the direction or

location of an object, or to introduce something – and an individual preposition can be

used in more ways than one.

8
As mentioned previously, when should give simple direction to people

who ask you. But, it will be easier to understand if you add some preposition

in your explanation. For example “ From police office, you may go straight

on Main Street. Then turn right on Second Street. After that, turn left on

Central Avenue and it's next to hospital”. We put next to hospital to make

people think that if they can find the exact place, they can refer hospital

because the place is next to it.
