Definition of terms-CONSTRUCTION
CONSTRUCTION
the art, science and business of
building; the process of building from
site preparation through erection,
assembly and finishing; the manner in
which materials are ordered, assembled
and united into a whole, as frame
construction; all on-site work done from
site preparation, excavation, foundation,
assembly of all the components and
installation of utilities and equipment of
a building or structure.

Definition of terms-CONSTRUCTION
ERECTION
installation in place of components of a
building/structure

Definition of terms-CONSTRUCTION
ADDITION
any construction which
increases the height or area of an
existing building/structure

4

Definition of terms-CONSTRUCTION
ALTERATION
construction in a
building/structure involving changes
in the materials used, partitioning,
location and size of openings,
structural parts, existing utilities and
equipment but does not increase
the overall area thereof.

Definition of terms-CONSTRUCTION
RENOVATION
any physical change made on a building/structure to
increase its value, utility and/or to improve aesthetic quality.

Definition of terms-CONSTRUCTION
CONVERSION
a change in the use or occupancy of a
building/structure or any portion/s thereof
which has different requirements.

Definition of terms-CONSTRUCTION
REPAIR
remedial work done on
any damaged or deteriorated
portion/s of a building to
restore its original condition.

Definition of terms-CONSTRUCTION
MOVING
the transfer of any
building/structure or portions thereof
from its original location or position to
another, either within the same lot or
to a different one.

Definition of terms-CONSTRUCTION
DEMOLITION
the systematic dismantling or
destruction of a building/structure,
in whole or in part.

the property of a metal
that permits mechanical
deformation by extrusion,
forging, rolling, etc. without
fracturing.

PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
9. ELASTICITY
the property of a material
that enables it to deform in
response to a applied force and
recover its original size and
shape upon removal of the force

16 DIVISION OF BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

(CSI MASTERFORMAT)
MasterFormat was produced by the Construction Specifications
Institute (CSI) as a standard for organizing specifications and other written
information for commercial and institutional building projects, also refer.
MasterFormat is used throughout the construction industry to format
specifications for construction contract documents. The purpose of this
format is to assist the user to organize information into distinct groups when
creating contract documents, and to assist the user searching for specific
information in consistent locations. The information contained in
MasterFormat is organized in a standardized outline format within 50
Divisions (16 Divisions pre-2004). Each Division is subdivided into a number
of Sectionsed as “Dewey Decimal System” of building construction
