DIVISION 6
PLASTICS

PLASTICS
Any of numerous synthetic or natural organic materials that are mostly
thermoplastic or thermosetting polymers of high molecular weight and
that can be molded, extruded or drawn into objects, films or filaments

TYPES:
1. Thermoplastic
2. Thermosetting plastic

2

THERMOPLASTIC
A plastic capable of softening or fusing when heated without a
change in any inherent properties and of hardening again when cooled.
This means it can be remolded or reformed when heated

THERMOPLASTIC
POLYVINYL CHLORIDE “PVC”
a thermoplastic widely
used in the manufacture of floor
coverings, insulation and piping.

THERMOPLASTIC
VINYL
any of various tough,
flexible plastics made from
polyvinyl resin

THERMOPLASTIC
POLYVINYL RESIN
any of a class of thermoplastic resins formed by polymerizing or
copolymerizing a vinyl compound

THERMOPLASTIC
POLYVINYL BUTYRAL “PVB”
a transparent thermoplastic
resin used chiefly as the interlayer
of safety glasses

THERMOPLASTIC
POLYETHYLENE “PE”
a tough, light and flexible
thermoplastic used especially in
the form of sheeting and film for
packaging, damp proofing and as
a vapor retarder

THERMOPLASTIC
POLYPROPYLENE “PPR”
a though thermoplastic
that is resistant to heat and
chemicals and used for pipes,
fittings, electrical insulation and
carpeting fibers

THERMOPLASTIC
POLYSTYRENE
a hard, tough, stable
thermoplastic that is easily
colored, molded, expanded or
rolled into sheets

THERMOPLASTIC
ACRYLONITRILE-BUTADINE-STYRENE “ABS”
a thermoplastic used for making
plastic pipes and hardware products that
are tough, rigid and resistant to heat and
chemicals

THERMOPLASTIC
POLYCARBONATE
Polycarbonates are a group of
thermoplastic polymers containing
carbonate groups in their chemical
structures. Polycarbonates used in
engineering are strong, tough
materials, and some grades are
optically transparent or translucent

THERMSETTING PLASTIC
A plastic that becomes permanently rigid when heated and
cannot be softened and remolded again. Also called Thermoset

THERMSETTING PLASTIC
POLYURETHANE “PU”
a thermoplastic or thermoset plastic resins used in flexible and rigid
foams, elastomers and resins for sealants, adhesives and coatings

THERMSETTING PLASTIC
POLYESTER
any of a group of thermosetting used in the manufacture of
plastics and textile fibers

THERMSETTING PLASTIC
FIBERGLASS-REINFORCED PLATIC
a polyester reinforced with
glass fibers and used in the
translucent roofs and skylights,
facings for sandwich panels and
molded plumbing fixtures

RUBBER
A material made by chemically treating and thoughening natural
rubber, valued for its elasticity, non-conduction of electricity and
resistance to shock and moisture

RUBBER
ELASTOMER
any of various polymers having the
elastic properties of natural rubber, as butyl
rubber or neoprene

RUBBER
BUTYL RUBBER
a synthetic rubber having exceptional
resistance to sunlight and usually low
gaseous permeability, produced by
polymerizing butylene and used in roofing
membranes as waterproofing barriers

RUBBER
NEOPRENE
a synthetic rubber characterized
by superior resistance to oils and
sunlight, and used in the paints,
roofing membranes, flashings, gaskets
and bearings

RUBBER
SILICONE RUBBER
a rubber made from silicone
elastomers and noted for its retention of
flexibility and tensile strength over a wide
temperature range
