THERAPEUTIC COMMUNICATION

N : Hi i’m gonna be your nurse today, how do you today?


P : i’m doing well, how about you?
N : i’m well, so can you tell me your name and your age?
P : ....
N : thank you, so do you know why you’re here today?
P : my blood sugar’s been really high i lost consciousness and they brought me
here i guess i haven’t been taking care of myself
N : sure, well thank you come to the hospital get checked out so i guess your
blood sugar’s it;s kind of high and i hope you care for yourself. Can you tell me
how you’ve been doing it in
P : i haven’t been eating right or taking my medication i keep forgetting.
N : so you are not mad sending your diet at home
P : NO
N : what’s happened over you can eat me lately
P : i’ve been eating pizza, chips, cookies, and sometimes i’ll have a salad then i
have a big old on walks like i used to because my feet really hurt
N : it must difficult being pain these parents in it
P : yeah it’s hard to get around
N : i understand what you are saying the doctor may recommend administering
insulin at home to help with your blood glucose levels
N : alright the insulin injection is of course for when you have high blood sugar so
you understand it
P : YES
N : the doctor recommended for you, i’m going to say how do you it at home. I’m
gonna do it and then i’ll have you demonstrate of what i did to see if i’m kind of
do it yourself and if you can’t do it the first time it’s okay.

N : okay this cop it looks like skin right, then wash your hands after it take the
alcohol swab through circulation motion over your skin. Hold the syringe upright
at a 45 degree angle, remove the caps from the insuline bottle and needle, then as
you take the insulin from the bottle insert the needle into tthe plug point and push
the pluner down. Pull the plunger down until the black end of the pluger reaches
the right dose. Place the insulin bottle down and slide the syringeg out slowly.
Then select an injection point and clean area, gently withdraw the injection area,
insert te needle at 90 degree angle and then wait for 10 seconds before release the
syringe. Okay you want to try to demonstrate it for me?
P : yes , so i’m gonaa let that dry then i’m going to taking insulin in a bottle reach
the right dose, then insert the needle on stomach or arms, wait for 10 seconds.
Okay sounds pretty easy.
