1. Define the following:

a. Sinawali

Sinawali in literal translation means "to weave." In Arnis definition, it is a martial art technique which
uses a pattern of continuously weaving in the same pattern and repeatedly. Either by a simple pattern or
a complicated one and variation can also include either high and low or left and right.

b. Basic Sinawali

Basic Sinawali is comprised of two techniques; namely the single Sinawali and double Sinawali. The
single Sinawali is made up of a high angled strike to the temple area, withdraw the Arnis and then
followed up with a low strike to the knee level with the same Arnis and withdraw the cane and place it
above the shoulder. You then rinse and repeat with the opposite cane. Meanwhile, double Sinawali
begins with the right hand up and left hand tucked under the right armpit. Initial strike is to the temple
with the right hand and as the right hand is being retracted to the left shoulder, a strike is released by
the knee using the left hand. Next would be a backhand strike to the temple with the right hand, then
retract the left hand to the left shoulder.

c. Open Sinawali

Open Sinawali start by placing both Arnis on top of the respective shoulders they are being held. Initial
strike by the right hand which is simultaneously retracted to the initial position as a strike with the left
hand is made. After that, as the left hand is retracted the same way the right hand was, a strike to the
knee using the right hand shall be executed followed by the left hand on the same pattern. It is then
repeated depending on how long the pattern shall be performed.

d. X Sinawali

X Sinawali starts the same way as the open Sinawali. Initial strike is to the temple using the right hand
which is then tucked under the left armpit as a strike to the temple with the left hand is made. After
that, the left hand shall be placed on the right shoulder while striking the knee using the right hand. Last
strike would be to pull the right hand to the right shoulder and striking the knee using the left hand. The
pattern is repeated just like how other Sinawali's depend on how many or how long it shall be
performed.

e. X Pataas Sinawali

X Pataas Sinawali or X upward Sinawali starts just like the previous Sinawali's with both Arnis on top of
the respective shoulders they are being held. Initial strike with the right hand to the temple which is
then tucked under the left armpit as a strike to the temple with the left hand is made. Left hand would
then be placed on top of the right shoulder. After that, a backhand strike to the temple with the right
hand is executed and as it is being retracted to the right shoulder, a strike to the temple with the left
hand is executed as it is guided back to the initial position towards the left shoulder.

2. What is the purpose of Sinawali?

On basic execution, the purpose of Sinawali is to develop form and the motor skills. However, to more
advanced practitioners, the drills offer more enlightenment and development of physical movement and
skills.
