TOPIC: Making an Essay Outline
 When writing an essay, in the beginning, it is best to make an outline of the topic to be
discussed before writing anything down on paper.
 Having an outline likewise makes it easier for an author to organize one’s thoughts and
information in relation to the topic at hand. Finally, outlines help develop the thinking process
of the author with regard to the volume of information obtained.
 Essay usually have a structure; introduction, body and conclusion.

 Create an outline of the given paragraph
 Write an essay out of the given paragraph outline.

TOPIC: Types of Essay


 Cause and Effect Essay - is a type of essay in which causal links are established in order to
produce an effect or outcome, usually, in a chronological order.
 Classification Essay - classifies or categorizes a topic into a general whole and provides an
insight into the smaller parts of the whole.

 Compare and Contrast Essay - highlights the similarities of two or more topics while at the
same time identifies the differences between the same.

 Critical Essay - is usually an argumentative form of essay, which aims at presenting an objective
analysis of a topic. The purpose of a critical essay is usually to provide argument/s for or against
a certain subject matter, which then necessarily requires careful research, analysis, and sound
logic and structure.

 Descriptive Essay - is characterized by details that appeal to the sensory abilities of its
audience----physical, emotional, psychological, intellectual, etc. Descriptive essays usually
employ literary tools such as metaphors, similes, and other figurative language to arrive at an
impression.

 Narrative Essay - the defining characteristic of a narrative essay is its focus on the plot. It may
likewise use literary devices such as flashbacks and other plot devices to arrive at the essay’s
climax.
