I. Teaching Learning Objective

At the end of the class, students are able to
1. Explain the Bronsted-Lowry acid definitions.
2. Give examples of acid according to Bronsted-Lowry.
3. Explain the Bronsted-Lowry base definitions.
4. Give examples of base according to Bronsted-Lowry.
5. Explain about acid and base conjugation pair.

II. Teaching Learning Material

Bronsted-Lowry Acid Base Definitions.
Bronsted-Lowry, defined acid and base based on the transfer of proton.
Bronsted-Lowry Acid Definition
 An acid is a species that donates a proton to another species in the
reaction.
 A Bronsted-Lowry acid could be a molecular compound, anion or
cation.

Example:
1. Molecular compound
HNO3(aq) + H2O(l) NO3 (aq) + H3O (aq)
2. Anion
NH4+(aq) + H2O(l) NH3(aq) + H3O+(aq)
3. Cation
H2PO4-(aq) + H2O(l) HPO42-(aq) + H3O+(aq)

Bronsted-Lowry Base Definitions

 A base is a species that accepts a proton in a reaction.

 A Bronsted-Lowry base could be a molecular compound, anion or
cation.

Example:

1. Molecular compound
NH3(aq) + H2O(l) NH4+(aq) + OH-(aq)
2. Anion
CO32-(aq) + H2O(l) HCO3-(aq) + OH-(aq)
3. Cation
Al(H2O)5(OH)2+(aq) + H2O(l) Al (H2O)6(aq) + OH-(aq)

Acid Base conjugation pair

• From the Latin word conjugare, meaning “to join together.”

• Every acid has a conjugate base (a species which has one poton less
than the acid). The two species constitute a conjugate pair.
