Problem 1:
Consider an incompressible flow around a semi cylinder as
shown in figure. Assume that velocity distribution for the
windward surface of the cylinder is given by

V  2U  sin  iˆ

Calculate the lift and drag coefficients if the base pressure (i.e.,
the pressure on the flat, or leeward surface) is equal to the
pressure at the separation point, pcorner.
Also draw the typical streamlines in the flow-field.

Problem 2:
A freestream wind, V∞(t) is flowing over a stationary circular cylinder with radius, R = 3 m as shown
in figure. The freestream wind fluctuates with time and can be expressed as
V (t )  U  (1  A sin 2 ft ) where t is the time, U∞ = 2 m/s, A = 0.2, and f = 0.5 Hz. Model the problem
considering potential flow approach and take ρ = 1.2 kg/m3.
(i) Derive an expression of pressure coefficient, cp on the cylinder surface.
(ii) Estimate the aerodynamic forces developed by the cylinder
(iii) Graphically show the time history of the aerodynamics forces.
