Happy Hanukkah!
Hanukkah has attained a major cultural significance in the Jewish calendar. Many
values are reflected in the holiday and there are many ways to acknowledge and
celebrate them. As part of the project "Each one is a small light and together we
are a steadfast", we invite Jewish Community Centers in Israel and around the
world to celebrate on one of the eight days of Hanukkah in the spirit of world
Jewry: 1. A virtual celebration together with a JCC from around the world on
one of the eight days of Hanukkah, in the spirit of world Jewry. 2. Enriching a
local Hanukkah event with content that brings to the table the voices of Jewish
communities around the world. In this booklet you will find a proposal for a
Hanukkah ceremony and study session in the spirit of world Jewry (with Hebrew,
English and transliteration of the Hebrew), as well as links to educational sources
and enrichment. In addition, an appendix with a JCC Global guide for a global
Hanukkah event.

Let’s celebrate the unity and the diversity of world Jewry!

There are 15.2 million Jews in the world today. 6.93 million live in the state
of Israel while the rest live all over the world. Approximately 6 million live
in the United States and 2.3 million are spread over dozens of countries.
Among these, larger Jewish communities include France, Canada, UK,
Argentina, Russia, Germany and Australia. Smaller communities are
distributed in cities and towns all over the world (According to data released
by the Jewish Agency for Israel, September 4, 2021). World-wide, there are
more than 1000 Jewish Community Centers. They are the heart of the Jewish
community. They are grass root organizations, dedicated to the common
purpose of Jewish continuity through educational, cultural, social welfare
and recreational activities.
JCC Global is the umbrella organization that connects over 1,000 JCCs
worldwide and is a preeminent organization in Jewish Peoplehood education

The Hanukkah story is the
quintessential story of religious
pluralism. The miracle of
Hanukkah is the story of a small
band of believers withstanding
the onslaught of a massive army
trying to kill or convert them.
When the Greeks attempted to
destroy the Jews around 170
BCE, the Maccabees fought
back. They stood up against
religious tyranny, defending
their faith. Hanukkah, the
Festival of Lights, is a great
time to appreciate how we are
all made in God’s image, how
diversity and pluralism bring so
much light into our lives. This
may be an excellent opportunity
for you to explore how Jews
of different backgrounds,
religiosities, or cultures
celebrate Judaism. You may
want to watch movies, read
books, and visit places that
will expose you to the beautiful
mosaic of the Jewish People.

Encountering Other Cultures

One of the topics that Hanukkah suggests for discussion is the issue
of Judaism encountering other cultures - Jews who adopted symbols
and behaviors drawn from Greek-Hellenistic culture, both in terms of
ideological values and aesthetics. The aim of this study is to examine
this topic from a contemporary angle: to what extent do we also adopt
signs of Western culture?

 Blessing for the Eternal People

Let us bless the communities of the Jewish people, wherever they are all
around the world, each one of them another link in the eternal people’s
glorious chain across the generations. We pray that each community
will flourish in its spiritual life and in its social life, according to its
Jewish nature and its own world view. May each community bestow
a ray of its own light to the Jewish people and to the state of Israel;
may each earn recognition and esteem from the state of Israel and
from its fellow communities. The gates of the Jewish, democratic
and egalitarian state will stand forever open for all the children of
Israel who believe in the importance of its existence for the Jewish
people. We pray that every community will receive fair treatment
from its government and enjoy peace and security with its neighbors.
May all Jewish communities succeed in making their contribution to
healing the world, to increasing peace, and to strengthening the fabric
of society in the countries in which they dwell. May they and all the
Jewish people embody what is written in Scripture and in the teachings
of our sages: How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob! May they all join in
one assembly, the tribes of Israel as one, all Israel responsible for one
another, all Israel tied in friendship, and let us say Amen!
