A.Preparatory Activities
1. Greetings

Good Morning Class! Good Morning, Ma’am/Sir!

How are you?

We are great, Ma'am/Sir!
2. Prayer

For the prayer, may we call on Therese to

lead the prayer. (Student will lead the prayer)

Let us bow our heads and feel the presence

of the Lord. Lord, we thank you for this day. Thank you
for the guidance and protection as well as the
blessings and love that we always receive from
you every day. Please, forgive us for all the sins
we have committed. As we begin our class
today, bless us with your wisdom to absorb the
knowledge that we are about to learn. We ask
all of these in the name of Jesus, our Lord.
Amen.
Thank you, Therese, for leading the
prayer.

3. Class Structuring

Before we start, here are some class

reminders.

Reminders
1. Be participative in the class
2. Speak in English
3. Always check your LMS (Edmodo)
for announcements and activities

B. Review

Class, can you still remember the previous

lesson? Yes, Ma'am/Sir!

Alright, Can you give us a glimpse?

Last time, we talked about bibliography.

What does CMOS stand for?

Ma’am/Sir, CMOS stands for Chicago Manual

of Style.
Again, How do we write/arrange a
bibliography entry in CMOS format?
Sir/Ma'am, we begin with the author's last
name and first name, followed by the title of
the book and subtitle and then, place of
publication, the publisher’s name, and lastly,
Very good! How about if we are going to the year of publication.
cite a bibliography entry from an online
magazine, how should it be arranged?

Ma'am/Sir, the format of a bibliography entry

from an online magazine is Author’s last
name, First name. “Article Title.”
Newspaper/Magazine Title, Month Day, Year.
URL.
Below is a bibliography entry from an
online magazine, try to observe and tell
whether it was arranged properly or not?
It was not arranged properly, Ma’am/sir.

Then, what made it incorrect?

Ma’am/sir, the first name should be
capitalized.
Ma’am/sir, the magazine should come first
before the date of publication.
Impressive! How about this one? What is
the mistake that can be found in this
example?

Ma’am/Sir, the period should be placed before
the end quotation mark.
You may type it in the comment box.

Yes, Very Good! It seems like you have

fully understood our previous lesson and I
think you are ready for another lesson.

C. Motivation

Before we jump into our next lesson, let’s

have a game first. The name of this game
is pictures that sound familiar!
Are you excited? Yes, Ma’am/Sir!

I will show you pictures and then you are

going to combine and eliminate letters
from the things, name of a person, or icons
exhibited in each picture to form a word.

We will have an example first/trial card so

that you will have an idea of what to do in
this activity.
Okay, here we have two pictures. Let us
start.
I will call on somebody to help me guess
the pictures presented on the screen.

Yes, Leslie, what are the two pictures?

Very good! Now, Can you guess the
meaning of the combined pictures? Ma’am/Sir it is Exam and an Apple.
Ma’am/Sir, I think it represents an example.

So, are you ready?

D. Lesson Proper

From the game we had earlier, we

encountered words like before, during,
likewise, namely and despite.
Today, you will learn how to identify and
create different sentences with the use of
Transition signals.
Now, What is transition signals?
Transition signals are words and phrases that
connect ideas of sentences and paragraphs for
coherence.
Will you please read the meaning of the
transition signal?
Alexandra?

Alright. Based on its definition, transition

signals are words and phrases that
connect ideas of sentences and paragraphs.
In other words, transition signals are
linkers to indicate the relationship of ideas
in sentences or paragraphs.

Do you have any idea why we need to use

transition signals? Ma’am/Sir because transition signals serve as
Raise your hand if you want to answer. cues and organize the ideas of the sentences.

Yes, Mark?

Thank you, Mark, for sharing your idea.

Actually, Mark has a point. Transitional
words or phrases act as connectors to link
two or more ideas. With this, the ideas in
sentences or even in paragraphs will be
organized.

Now, I want you to look at the sentences

and try to locate the word that connects the
two ideas.

You may type your answers in the (students will type their answers)
comment box.

Anne used to go to St Joseph parish every But

Sunday, but when COVID-19 pandemic Similarly
came, she seldom went to church.
Similarly, Josh rarely goes to church to
protect himself from acquiring the virus.

As you can see in the first sentence, it

showed the difference between the
situation back then and now.

This brings us to the first type of transition

signal, which is
(students will raise their hands)
Any volunteer to read the definition of
Comparison/Contrast

Okay, Karla kindly read the first one.

1. Comparison/Contrast - point out

similarities and differences of ideas
in sentences or paragraphs.

Other words or phrases that can be used to

show comparison include as, also,
likewise, and in the same way.

Some other words or phrases that can be

used to show contrast are despite,
however, even though, and on the
contrary.

Despite can be used to introduce a fact that

is in sharp contrast with another fact.

For example: Despite all the red flags he

showed, she still loved him the most.

Despite the challenges of COVID-19

pandemic, students of SJCNHS are still
eager to learn.

Another example

The people of San Jose used to celebrate

Pagibang Damara for their bountiful
harvest however when the pandemic came (student will read the definition)
they cannot celebrate it the way they used
to.

Next type is Chronology. Will you please

read the meaning, Amity.

2. Chronology- helps to signal

changes in time.
Kindly read the definition of Chronology.

Words like before, after, next, first, during

and simultaneously can be included in a
narrative to show an event or process that
happened in chronological order.

An example sentence of this is: We listen

to the teacher during the discussion.

Example sentence;
I miss the life before the pandemic, where
we will travel to different places.

Before you go out, make sure you are

wearing a facemask and you have the (student will read the definition)
alcohol that you will use after you hold
things in public places.

The next type of transition signal is

3. Cause/Effect- this type of

transition signal shows the
consequences of an action.

Will you please read the meaning of

Cause/Effect transition signals?

Alright! It shows the result or the outcome

of an action.
Some examples are: because, due to, since,
as a result, and therefore. (student will raise their hand)

Due to the high number of COVID-19

cases in San Jose City, residents are
reminded to limit going outside when it is
not necessary.
Consequently, stronger regulations were
implemented to ensure that they follow
precautionary measures such as wearing
facemask and face shields.

Now, what do you think is the importance

of Cause and effect transition words in a Ma’am/Sir using Cause and effect transition
sentence? words will help the writer unite the
Anyone? thoughts/ideas he/she is trying to say.

That is correct! Another? It will give the sentences a smooth flow of ideas.

Very good!

Next type we have,

4. Illustration/Example- this adds
emphasis on the idea and gives
evidence on the idea presented.

Will you please read the meaning of

Illustration/Example type of transition
signal.
Yes, Faith.

Thank you.

The most common transition word for this

one is “for example.”
21st Century learners are considered the
most flexible learners nowadays because
they are born in the digital literacy world.
For example, they can easily learn how to
navigate mobile games.

But if you will give different examples you

can use such as:

Every Sunday, my roommate and I attend

the mass at St. Joseph Parish and we will
eat street foods such as isaw, kwek-kwek
and fishball.

Other transitional words that can be used

to illustrate or give examples are to
demonstrate, specifically, truly and
namely.

Important reminder: Transition signals

can be used within a single sentence,
between two different sentences,
paragraphs, or even in between paragraphs
to achieve coherence.
E. Generalization

Let us now sum up our lesson for today.

Again, what are Transition signals!
These are the words and phrases that connect
the ideas of sentences and paragraphs for
coherence.
Very good! Why do you think transition
signals are essential in writing a sentence
or paragraph? They provide coherence to the story.
Serves as a cue to the reader/listener

That’s correct! Some more ideas?

Okay. What are the four types of

Transition Signals we have tackled today? Comparison/Contrast
Kindly enumerate, yes Patricia? Chronology
Cause/Effect
Very Good! Illustration/Example

We use such as when giving different examples

When do we use such as? Yes, Hanna? that support or give evidence to the idea.

Very good, Class. It seems that you

learned something from our lesson today.

F. Application
For this activity, I want you to work in
groups. You will be collaborating with
your groupmates to create a paragraph
showing using different types of transition
signals.
Title: “My life before and during the
Pandemic”

Directions:
Write a paragraph with five sentences
about your lives before and during the
pandemic using the given transition signals
in the box. Observe coherence and criteria
in writing the sentences. You will be
graded using the rubrics below.

Before On the contrary

Specifically

because Despite

Answer Key:
1. For instance/Example
G. Evaluation 2. So/ Effect
Directions: I will post 5 sentences on the 3. Because/ Cause
screen then identify the transition word/s 4. Soon/ Chronology
used then classify the type of transition 5. On the contrary/ Contrast
signal presented.

1. Students find it hard to concentrate

in online classes. For instance,
noisy or crowded areas will not
help the student to focus on the
lesson.
2. The little girl wanted ice cream, so
she asked her mother to buy her
one.
3. San Jose City is known as the None, Ma’am.
Christmas Capital of Nueva Ecija
because of its grandeur lights
every Christmas season.
4. This pandemic will end. Soon
everything will be back to normal.
5. Rafael is a very energetic person.
On the contrary, Alexandra is a
shy type.

H. Assignment
Do you have any questions regarding our
topic?

For your assignment. I want you to

research the meaning of the following
types of transition signals and give one (1)
example for each. Note: Give your own
example.

1. Addition
2. Clarification
3. Qualification
4. Summary/Conclusion

Write it on a one-half sheet of paper and

take a picture of your answer then
comment or attach it to the attendance
prompt I will post on Edmodo during our
asynchronous session.

Do you have any questions? Clarification

or comments. If none, have a nice day and
see you in our next synchronous class.
