Personal Statement of Md.

Fahim Shahriar Khan

I decided to study Social Work MSc degree at London Metropolitan University because I wanted
to expand my knowledge and use my zeal to solving the difficult problems that society faces
today. I believe that my educational and professional background has instilled in me the qualities
required to meet the rigor of this demanding course.

I studied numerous facets of social work during my undergraduate years as a social work student.
During employment, as a Social Worker, in a project, ‘Child Sensitive Social Protection in
Bangladesh’, under the Department of Social Services, Ministry of Social Welfare of Bangladesh
Government, I have perceived that there is little more to go with my acquired knowledge to deal
with all issues in the professional arena and I need to be equipped with more specific strategies
of international standards to be a recognized social worker. Pursuing a Social Work MSc degree
from London Metropolitan University would help me to build a universal outlook regarding my
field of interest, child and family welfare.

Being a developing and densely populated country, Bangladesh has a large part of its population
living in a vicious cycle of poverty. Social issues are increasing in Bangladesh in recent times
and the welfare of family and children are threatened, especially since the start of the COVID-19
pandemic. When I participated in various Social Research training, such as the training course by
the Ministry of Planning, Government of Bangladesh, on ‘Research Techniques in Social
Science’, I felt that profound specialized knowledge, skill-set, and expertise is needed to be an
effective social worker to eradicate such drawbacks.

A desire to extend my knowledge to solve the demanding problems in societies is what

motivated me to pursue a Social Work MSc degree at the London Metropolitan University. I
want to acquire advanced knowledge to reach my ultimate goal, that is, to improve the living
standards of Bangladeshi people. In this context, the Social Work MSc program at London
Metropolitan University, which is accredited by "Social Work England," provides me with such
an advantage. The course module will give me a comprehensive study experience as well as
empirical knowledge. For example, the course "Assessment Planning and Professional Ethics"
allows students to understand and reflect on models and theories of assessment and planning for
children and adults within the context of social work ethics and values. Hence it will help me to
deal with the underprivileged families in my community and perceive their needs in their social
contexts. The “Protecting Children and Adults” course will assist me in better understanding
child and vulnerable adult protection in the context of current legislation, policy, and practice
guidelines. It will assist me in dealing with my existing job duties, allowing me to develop my
professionalism.

In addition to the United Kingdom, I included Australia, Canada, and Germany on my list. But it
was the United Kingdom's great educational system that drew me there. The United Kingdom
provides an excellent opportunity for overseas students to realize their full potential.
Furthermore, the United Kingdom is regarded as a multicultural hotspot where students may
learn about a variety of cultures in one location.

I'll have to return to my current job after finishing the course. By appropriately employing the
obtained experiences and expertise, I will boost my professionalism. In addition, getting a
“Social Work England” accredited degree from the London Metropolitan University will allow
me to be promoted to a top hierarchical position in my employment. This degree will pave the
way toward my dream career to be, eventually, a part of “Save the Children, Bangladesh''. I am
confident that I will utilize the knowledge and forward-thinking gathered from my Master’s
degree to the enhancement of the Socio-Economic condition of my country.

My background, motivation, and resourcefulness lead me to believe that I can make a substantial
contribution to your Social Work MSc program. I greatly anticipate your assistance in obtaining
a place at your prestigious university.
