Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh.


Praise us for the presence of Allah SWT who has given us the grace of
health and opportunity, so that we can complete the critical journal review
assignment entitled “The Difficulties in Consecutive Interpreting toward the
Student’s Standpoint in Learning Interpreting Subject”. We also thank to ma’am
MORADA TETTY, S.S., M. Hum as a lecturer in subject of Advanced
Interpretation, who have entrusted us to complete this task.

This assignment was made to fulfill the critical journal review of Advanced
Interpretation. The critical journal review that we make of course compiled from
the source of the journal that have been read. The authors realize the preparation of
this critical journal review is not perfect, for this reason we expect criticism and
suggestions for improving the results of the critical journal review that we will
make next, this task is nothing perfect without good advice.

I. INTRODUCTION

1.1 Rationalization of the Importance of CJR


Critical Journal Review is a task where students are required to criticize one or
more journals, review an existing journal and students can also compare it with two or
more other journals. It can use as need a reference and when we compare two journals we
can know which journals are more relevant to be used as reading sources. In making a
Critical Journal Review which is done is reviewing the contents of journals, in terms of
reviews made based on arguments and evidence that can be justify. To review journals we
can get it through reading the journals first then summarizing the contents of the journals
and you can compare it with other journals, and criticizing the advantages and
disadvantages of discussing the contents of the journals.

1.2 Purpose of Writing CJR


The purpose of the Critical Journal Review is to review the contents of the journals,
precisely to review one or more contents of the journals. In addition to reviewing the
contents of the destination journals, other information is contained in journals. The purpose
of this Critical Journal Review is to train yourself to be able to think critically in finding
information provided by the one, two or more journals. Another aim is to compare the
contents of the journals.

1.3 Benefits of CJR


a. To find out the method used by the author in accordance with the conditions and
environment that we are currently facing.
b. Finding and knowing the information contained in the journal.
c. Train yourself to think critically in finding information provided by the journals.

II. DISCUSSION

2.1 Summary of the Journal


Interpretation occurs when one person translates orally what he hears from the
speaker into another language. Pochhacker (2007), interprets that translating is where the
first and last rendition in another language of an utterance is in the source language.
Meanwhile, Kade in Nosratzandegan defines interpretation as a form of translation in
which the source language text is present, and the target language text is a procedure under
time pressure. Pochhacher (2007) divides three types of interpretation; they interpret
sequentially by recording, simultaneous interpreting for international conference settings,
and interpretive dialogue in the community.

Sequential interpretation is the spoken translation of the speaker's words into


another language when the speaker has finished or paused to interpret. This means the
interpreter takes notes while listening to the speech, then interprets during the pause. For
example, if the Americans and the Indonesian President are having a discussion,
meanwhile the interpreter will interpret successively in both directions. According to
Nosratzandegan, the main problems that translators complain about are usually of three
types; namely notes, memory, and speed. In line with Barik quoted in Pratiwi (2016: 128)
there are main types of errors in interpreting successively 1) literal translation, 2)
inadequate language skills, 3) errors in register conservation, 4) distortion, 5) addition, 6)
negligence, 7) protocols, procedures, ethics, and, 8) non-conservation of paralinguistic
features.

In the research in this journal, the researcher uses a qualitative approach and the
background of the research is the students' difficulties in learning to deal with. Participants
in this study found 30 students from three different types. The research instruments were
observation and interviews. The data that has been collected in the study were analyzed
based on the interactive analysis model developed by Miles & Huberman in Sugiyono.
There are three components in this model; data reduction, data display, and verification.

According to the results of observations and interviews, it was found that the difficulties
faced by students in interpreting the subject were:

1. Lack of mastery of the source-target language. Language as a communication tool plays


an important role in human life. The inability to write can cause many problems, both
personally and professionally. Robbins explained that an interpreter is a
communication bridge between two different languages so that an interpreter must
master the source language and the target language. Mastery includes mastery of
vocabulary, grammar, and conversation.
2. Poor ability to listen and speak. Listening is one part of the skills possessed by an
interpreter. A person can have effective communication if they have excellent listening
skills. In the interpretation process, there is a sender component, channel, and news,
get the effect, and a component responds when the interpretation process occurs.
3. Insufficient speed adaptability. Interpreting is an attempt to reproduce in the target
language with the closest possible equivalent of the source language. Pinchuck states
that interpreting is the process of finding the equivalent utterance in the target language
of a single address or source language. Interpreting is an activity that takes place
verbally and the product is also in oral form. The speed at which a speaker speaks
dramatically affects interpreting accuracy.
4. Quality inaccuracies or failure of translation results are determined by two factors,
namely accuracy and clarity. Precision means the extent to which the source language
message is conveyed into the target language text. Transparency means the measure by
which listeners can easily understand the message being communicated in the target
language text.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

3.1 Advantages of the Journal


Well based on the journal we have read, we feel that this journal is really very good,
we can say this because: the identity of the journal is very complete, then the contents of
the journal are also very easy to understand, we can even know first-hand the systematics
of making this journal, where this journal uses IMRAD. This journal only consists of 3
sheets, but the contents are very dense. And as we can see that this journal is supported by
the very good because it is supported by a lot of references, we can see this in no. 2 of the
literature review. Then the results of this study are also very clear, located in section 4.
That is result, and the thing that makes it very easy for readers in this result section is, the
result itself consists of 4 subtitles, therefore readers can distinguish the results from one
problem to another, and in this journal we get a summary, this will help readers get the
main points of all the material, lastly on the reference side, where we can see that the
references used by this journal are 7 references, therefore we feel that these 7 references
are very sufficient to support and strengthen the opinions expressed by the author.

3.2 Disadvantages of the Journal


And for the disadvantages in this journal, in our opinion, which lies in the font of
the writing, the font of the writing in this journal is quite small, this makes it a little difficult
for the reader, because in general the writing in the journal is not this small, so when the
reader who is accustomed to journal writing in general, reads the journal. This, this will
make the reader, feel a little foreign.

CLOSING

4.1 Conclusion
In conclusion, a critical journal review is an activity to evaluate the advantages and
disadvantages of an idea and topic along with ideas from one or two journal. A critical
journal review provides a description, analysis, and interpretation that allows the reader to
judge the quality of a journal. It can be found that journal have their advantages and
disadvantages. As well as the material that can be concluded from the journal is, many
people mistake translators and interpreters. Many people think that an interpreter is the
same as a translator. Translation is a polysemous word, which is used in different meanings,
even in the same text. Robert states that as a general term, it refers to either the written or
spoken transfer of a message from one language to another, or as a specific term that
designates most of the frequently written tasks. Interpreting is the process of translating
spoken language from the source language to the target language. Christoffels and Groot
state that interpreting is a complex task in which translators are routinely involved in
understanding, carrying, and producing styles at the same time. In oral interpretation,
successive interpretation is the interpreter waiting for the speaker to stop after a few
sentences before giving statements in the target language from memory and individual
notes, mainly based on so-called symbols or ideograms. Christoffels has classified
sequential interpretation into two types; intermittent and continuous, based on the time
allowed for the translator to translate. Not only that, professional translation is the process
of listening to spoken statements in one language, analyzing their content and responding
to the exact same message as words spoken in another language.

4.2 Suggestion
In this suggestion, we want to suggest to several parties, first of course to the author,
and that is we recommend using a larger writing size (font) , because this will make the
journal a little longer on the sheet and easier to read, then we would like to suggest to
ourselves as reviewers, in order to be better and more focused in reviewing, the last we
suggest to the readers, we highly recommend reading this journal and please be focus
when reading it , because this journal is really very good, has important discussions and is
easy to understand.
