• Checking of attendance

Good afternoon, class! Good afternoon, ma’am!

So, what was your lesson last meeting? Ma’am, our lesson last meeting is about the
different types of fabrics.

That’s right! Very good!

Based on your understanding about the lesson last

meeting, what is the importance of distinguishing the Ma’am, the importance of being able to
different types of fabric? distinguish the different types of fabric is to have the
capability of choosing a good quality fabric when
purchasing. This is to ensure that what you’ve
chosen is suitable for the project you’re going to
work on. Besides, as an individual wearing clothes
every day, it is important to know what kind of fabric
our clothes is made from so that we can be able to
properly care our clothing and handle it better when
using and washing for it to last longer.

Very well said! It seems that you have fully

understand the lesson last meeting about fabrics.

B. Motivation
Now, before we proceed to our discussion,
let's have first a short game.

This game is called Riddles. The mechanic of this

game is that, anyone from the
class can answer the riddle by raising your hand. You
may also guess the answer as long as you can until
you arrive with the correct answer. Do you Yes, ma'am!
understand?

Alright! Here's now the first riddle...

"I turn once, what is out will not get in. I turn again,
what is in will not get out. What am I?" What's the Ma'am, the answer is a Key!
answer?

Very good! You've got the correct answer.

(Game will continue and other riddles will be (Student's will guess the answer and will arrive
shown) at the correct answer)

IV. Lesson Proper

A. Activity
Your activity today will be done by pair so choose your
partner now.
As your activity for today, I have here a jumbled letter.
All you need to do is to arrange the letters to form the
correct words.

I’ll give you 10 minutes only to answer the activity.

Please write your answers in a ¼ sheet of paper.

Do you understand, class?

(Teacher will start the activity)

B. Analysis
Now class, what have you observed with our activity? Yes, ma’am.

Yes, very good! From our previous lesson we tackled (Students will answer the activity)
about the different types of fabrics and this is the
continuation in learning more about the fabrics.
Therefore, in today’s lesson we are going to identify
the different types of fabric folds.

But before we jump in to that part, let’s briefly describe Ma’am, our activity today is related to our lesson
first what is fold in fabrics. yesterday which is about fabrics. I think, it’s about
how fabrics crinkles when in use.

Folds are integral part of garments. They occur

naturally in diverse ways according to different fabric.
Folds give any garment an extraordinary effect which
enhances its beauty and appeal. This is why it is
important for every fashion illustrator to understand
folds and know exactly how to illustrate it. Do you
understand class the what is fabric folds all about? Yes, ma'am!

Very well! Now, let’s dive into the main points of our
lesson today. If you’ve noticed from your activity
earlier, you have arranged 8 words and 6 of these
words are the types of fabric folds.
So, we have diaper fold, pipe fold, drop fold, half-lock 1. Pipe Fold
fold, spiral fold, and zig zag fold. Now, to understand • A series of semi-tubular shapes form as the
these types of fabric folds better, let’s discuss these material hangs free at the opposite end.
one-by-ones, starting from pipe fold. Please read the • The folds themselves are usually cylindrical
first type of fabric folds, Ms. Merino. in nature.
• Pipe folds are found in situations such as
dresses and curtains.

Excellent reading! Thank you, Ms. Merino.

Pipe fold happens when the origin of the material is
compressed or bunched together, which creates a
series of semi-tubular shapes or resembles a cylinder.
As you can see, pipe folds tend to occur on dresses
and curtains. That’s why the bottom part of the material
that is hanging free often has a wavy pattern to its
appearance.

Next type of fabric folds is zig-zag fold. Please read the 2. Zig-Zag Fold
following, Ms. Endaya. • These occur when pants bunch up at the
bottom of the leg or behind the knee due to
compression of the material.
• These folds also refer to folds that alternate
one another in a zig-zagged way.
• They are found in your sleeve when you
bend your elbow or in the folds when you
bend your knee.
Thank you, Ms. Endaya.
As you can see in the picture, zig-zag folds tend to
occur where pants bunch up at the bottom of the legs
or behind the knees. It can also be found in the sleeves
when we bend our elbow. This happens because the
material is being compressed. Basically, these folds
tend to alternate one another in a zig-zagged fashion,
with areas that fold inward and outward on itself and
can be more angular depending on how stiff the fabric
is.

Another type, we have spiral fold. Please read the 3. Spiral Fold
presentation, Ms. Pialago. • These occur in sleeves that have been
bunched up.
• They also occur in material that is being
wrapped around and bunched up on a
tubular form such as an arm or leg.

Good reading! Thank you, Ms. Pialago.

So yes, spiral folds are found in tubular cloth wrapped
around a cylinder object. You may be wondering how
these differ from the zig zag fold. The answer is simple,
it’s all in how the fabric lays. Softer fabric tends to
produce spiral folds and the folds will be rounded, not
as angular as zigzag folds.
Let's proceed now to the next type of fabric folds which 4. Half-Lock Fold
is half-lock fold. Please read, Ms. Corros. • You will see these in the Upper part of the
pants where the body is bending forward.
• You will also see this fold on the sides of the
knees when a person is squatting or seated,
causing a change in the direction of the
material to pop out on the sides.

Thank you, Ms. Corros.

Half-lock folds tend to occur where there is an abrupt
change in the direction of fabric. You’ll see this type of
fold on the sides of knees when a person wearing
slacks is squatting or sitting, causing an abrupt change
in the direction of the material popping out on the
sides. You can also see these folds in the upper part
of pants when the body is bending forward, such as
when a golfer bends over in preparation to swing a golf
club.

Next, we have diaper fold. Please read the 5. Diaper Fold

presentation, Ms. Cangayao. • These are seen on scarves and
handkerchiefs.
• These types of folds also happen when
material is sagging between two support
points.

Good job! Thank you, Ms. Cangayao.

Indeed, diaper folds occur when fabric hangs between
two points. There is typically a bend or curve where the
fabric sags/falls which is determined by how much
slack is between the two pinned points. As you can see
on the given example, this type of folds is often seen
on scarves, and also on handkerchiefs.

Let’s proceed now to the last type of fabric folds which 6. Drop Fold
is the drop fold. Please read the following, Ms. • These occur when fabric drops off a form to
Marquez. hang freely.
• The look of these types of folds is
determined by the form the material is
hanging off of and gravity.
Thank you, Ms. Marquez.
So, the characteristic common to all drop folds is that
fabric falls freely from a point or area of support. The
overall look of a drop fold is dictated by gravity and the
type of form it's hanging off. This fold is often used in
conjunction with other types of folds. Example of this
is a towel hanging on a hook

C. Abstraction

Now, we’re done discussing the six different types of

fabric folds.

Can anyone tell me again what are these different

Ma’am!
types of fabric folds?
Yes, Ms. Merino. Ma’am, the six different types of fabric folds are the
drop fold, diaper fold, half-lock fold, zig-zag fold,
spiral fold, and pipe fold.

Yes, very good.

It’s great that you have remembered all the types of
fabric folds. Now, what do you think is the importance
of knowing all these types of fabric folds? What will you
gain in learning our subject matter today? Ma’am!

Yes, Ms. Cangayao! Ma’am, as what you’ve said earlier, folds are integral
part of garments. Thus, as a HE students, we have
to basically know these types of fabric folds because
it is one of the most important factors when selecting
and purchasing a fabric in the market. Each fabric
has its own uniqueness and characteristics. And we
have to learn what are the natural fold tends to occur
in a certain type of fabric. In this way, we can be able
to perfectly choose a fabric depending on the design
and style we have in mind and to achieve a certain
effect which gives more aesthetic and appeal to the
clothing project we’re working on.

Yes, that’s correct. Thank you for your excellent ideas,

Ms. Cangayao. Indeed, folds are meant to add
character to the clothing and in turn adding more to the
character who’s wearing the clothes.

It seems that you have really listened to our discussion

today and fully understand the importance of fabric
folds in clothing construction. I’m sure all of you here
can already recognize fabric folds found in our
Yes, ma’am!
everyday life. Am I correct?

Very well!

D. Application
This time, we’ll have another short activity. But this will
be done by group, so form your group with 5 members
each and answer the following activity. I’ll give you 10
to 15 minutes to answer this activity. Then you may
pass your answer sheets if you’re group is already
done answering.

Direction: Examine the given pictures and identify what

type of fabric folds the pictures are, if it’s drop fold,
diaper fold, half-lock fold, zig-zag fold, spiral fold, or
pipe fold. Put your answer on the provided papers for
your groups.

(Student's will examine the pictures and formulate

(Teacher’s will show the pictures.) answers with their group.)
