VP44 FUEL TEMPERATURE SENSOR ERROR

CUMMINS

FAULT CODE: 264

PID: P0181
SPN: 174
FMI: 2

VP44 Fuel Pump

DESCRIPTION
This fault indicates a final defect of the VP44 temperature sensor. The sensor’s
reading indicates an unrealistic value, or the temperature is outside of the
signal range check thresholds, -45°C [-49°F] to 130°C [266°F].
The table below relates which actions are taken by the engine ECM or fuel
pump control module when Fault Code 264 becomes active.

Fault Action Taken By ECM or Fuel

Code Pump Control Module

No Action Fueling Disable

264 X
When a defect occurs within the VP44 controller temperature sensing circuit,
the controller defaults to a temperature value of 75°C [167°F]. If this is the
temperature's reading indicated on the monitor screen and this reading does
not vary with changes in the coolant temperature, then the VP44 is most
likely malfunctioning.
NOTE: An active pump fault code can result in deactivation of the fuel lift
pump by the engine ECM. Correct the active fault codes before replacing the
fuel lift pump.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The circuit for this fault code is contained within the Bosch® fuel pump
control module.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch ON and check to see if the fault code is active at engine start-up. Read the fault
codes using the diagnostic tool.
NOTE: If Fault Code 264 is inactive, but other fault codes are active, troubleshoot the active fault codes.

Fault Code 264 inactive?

Yes - Go to 2A No - If Fault Code 264 is active or inactive or other

active fault codes are present, then go to 2A or
applicable fault codes.

Step 2A) Turn key switch ON and verify the sensor accuracy, with a thermocouple or similar temperature
probe, while operating the engine under typical conditions.
• Place a thermocouple or similar temperature probe (thermometer kit, Part Number 3822666, can be
used) in the outlet tap of the fuel filter head.
• Connect diagnostic tool to the engine datalink.
• Load and operate the engine to typical operating temperature (82°C [180°F]).
• Compare the fuel temperature sensor’s reading on the diagnostic tool monitor screen to the reading
from the temperature probe.
NOTE: Readings must vary no more than ± 4°C [± 25°F] between the diagnostic tool and the temperature
probe when the engine is warm.
NOTE: If a temperature measuring device is not available. Answer “Yes” to this step. Readings need to be
checked while engine is operating at the conditions at which the fault occurred.

Readings correct?

Yes - (greater than -45°C [-49°F] and less than No - If temperature sensor’s reading defaults to 75°C
130°C [266°F]), locate and repair the cause of high [167°F]
fuel temperature Then go to 4A
Go to 3A

Step 3A) Turn key switch OFF and check for the possible causes of high fuel temperature:
• Wrong fuel type/grade
• Fuel tank fuel level is low
• High fuel supply
• Return fuel restriction
• Fuel tank installation not correct
• Fuel lines not routed correctly
• High ambient air temperature
• Engine coolant not cooling engine (overheat condition exists)

No conditions exist for high fuel temperature?

Yes - Go to 4A No - Remedy the cause of the high fuel temperature

Go to 4A

Step 4A) Connect all components and turn key switch ON. Disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let it
idle for 1 minute. Load and operate engine to typical operating temperature (82°C [180°F] coolant). Verify
Fault Code 264 is inactive.

Fault Code 264 inactive?

Yes - Go to 4B No - Return to the troubleshooting steps or contact

local Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all the
steps have been completed and rechecked
Go to 1A

Step 4B) Connect all components and turn key switch ON. Clear the inactive fault codes using the
diagnostic tool.
All fault codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes

with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
