Coolant Temperature Sensor Circuit

DESCRIPTION
The coolant temperature sensor is used by the electronic control
module (ECM) to monitor the temperature of the engine coolant.
The coolant temperature is used by the ECM for the engine
protection system, timing, and fueling control.
Make sure the airflow through the radiator is not obstructed.
COMPONENT LOCATION
The coolant temperature sensor is located on the engine in the
thermostat housing area.

TROUBLESHOOTING STEPS
Step 1A) Turn key switch ON and verify the sensor accuracy with a thermocouple or similar temperature
probe. Connect the temperature probe to the engine near the coolant temperature sensor. Connect
diagnostic tool to the vehicle datalink. Compare the coolant temperature reading on the service tool monitor
screen to the reading from the temperature probe.
NOTE: If temperature measuring device is not available, answer “YES” to this step.

Sensor reading is correct?

Yes - Go to 2A No - Refer to Fault Code 145

Step 2A) Connect all the components and disable the fault code. Start the engine, and let idle for 1 minute.
Verify Fault Code 151 is inactive.

Fault Code 151 inactive?

Yes - Go to 2B No - Return to the troubleshooting steps or contact


local Cummins Authorized Repair Location if all the
steps have been completed and checked again
Go to 1A

Step 2B) Connect all the components and clear the inactive fault codes using the diagnostic tool.

All fault codes cleared?

Yes - Repair is complete No - Troubleshoot any remaining active fault codes


with appropriate troubleshooting steps.
