Quarter 2-Week 3 (Day 1-5)

Competencies:
a.) Using the simple be-verbs (am, is, are, was, were) correctly in sentences

I. Objectives:
1. Use the simple be-verbs (am, is, are, was, were) correctly in sentences.

II. Content:
a. Topics:

Verbs can be action words or linking words.


Be- verbs are linking verbs, they link the subject
to a noun or an adjective in the
sentence.
Examples of be verbs/ linking verbs: is, are, am, was, and were

III. Procedure:

Day 1
A. Review of Previous lesson or Presenting of New Lesson
Do you like roses? Can you describe it and say your favorite color of roses?
Let’s read the following rhyme:

Roses are Red


Roses are red
Violets are blue
Sugar is sweet
And so are you.

B. Establishing a Purpose for the Lesson

● Take a look at this another poem, read and look at carefully at the words such as was
and were. Just like in the rhyme, “Roses are Red”, they used repetitive words such as
is and are for they link one word to another.

● In this lesson you will learn about the be-verbs or what we call linking verbs.
C. Presenting Examples/Instances of the Lesson

Read the following sentences. Take a look at the underlined words.

1. The fruit is fresh. 4. Marian was a cheerleader.

2. The plants are green. 5. We were tired from running.

3. I am a Grade Three pupil.

The underlined words are forms of be verbs. The common be verbs are am, is, are, was,
and were.

Day 2
D. Discussing new concepts
Linking verbs are not action words. They don’t express action. They
connect a subject of the verb to more information about that subject.

More Examples:
I am nervous.
m

She was excited about the party.

Am is always used with the subject I.


Examples: 1. I am your class president.
2. I am going to the market tomorrow.
3. I am thankful that you are here.
Is the form of the verb that is used for singular nouns.
Examples: 1. Tom is watering the plants.
2. He is collecting green plants.
3. Trina is choosing a plant for Tom.

Are the form of the verb that is used for plural nouns.
Examples: 1. The books are new.
2. The bread and knife are on the table.
3. We are children.

Day 3
E. Continuation of the Discussion of New Concepts

Was and were in the past tense. WAS, however, can be used only with the first and
third person singular, i.e. I, he, she, it, while WERE can be used with the rest of the
pronouns, i.e. you, we, they.
Was- singular (past)
Were- plural (past)

Examples: 1. It was very hot yesterday.


2. I was having fun at the park.
3. Who was with you at the park?

Examples: 1. Where were you?


2. They were drinking soda.
3. Why were you crying?

Activity 2: Read the following sentences and circle the be verbs used. Do it on your answer

H. Making Generalization and Abstractions about the Lesson

Am , is and are, are in the present tense.


Was and were in the past tense.
Is and was used with singular subjects.
Am is always used with the subject I.
Are and were used with plural subjects and the pronouns you, we
and they.

These forms of be verbs are linking verbs. They link the subject to a noun or
an adjective in the sentence.
