MECH223 – Dynamics in Rigid Bodies

Semi-Final - Exercise No.2

EDP Code: 09720 Date: 11/08/2021

Schedule: 10:30 – 11:30 pm MW LEC Total points: 20/20

Topic:
Kinetics of Particles: Newton’s Second Law of Motion – Tangential and Normal Acceleration

Directions: Answer the following problems and show your solution. Write your solution in a clean sheet of
paper and arrange it according to order. Make sure to put your final answer in a box. Avoid having too many
erasures in your solution.

1. The 0.8-mg car travels over the hill having the shape of a parabola. If the driver maintains a
constant speed of 9 m/s, determine both the resultant normal force and the resultant
friction al force that all the wheels of the car exert on the road at the instant it reached
point A. Neglect the size of the car.

2. The block B, having a mass of 0.2 kg, is attached to the vertex A

of the right circular cone using a light cord. The cone is rotating
at a constant angular rate about the z-axis such that the block
attains a speed of 0.5 m/s. At this speed, determine the tension
in the cord and the reaction which the cone exerts on the block,
Neglect the size of the block and the effect of friction.
