HYDROGEN BONDING

INTRODUCTION

Hydrogen bonding is a special type of dipole-dipole interaction between polar molecules

containing a hydrogen atom and a highly electronegative element such as nitrogen, oxygen, and
fluorine. It is responsible for the unique properties of water.

In the following activity, you will demonstrate how hydrogen bonding accounts for the attraction
among water molecules.

OBJECTIVES

 Explain how hydrogen bonding influences the property of water.

 Appreciate the importance of hydrogen bonding.

MATERIALS

a piece of paper
clear container
a pair of scissors
water

PROCEDURE

1. Get a strip of paper about 2 x 10 cm in size.

2. Cut the paper into a shape of a bird. Make the beak very pronounced.
3. Fill up a clear container with water.
4. Put the container on a table, making sure that the surface of the water is at eye level.
5. Wet the beak of the paper bird.
6. Hold the dry end and bring the wet beak close to the surface of the water. Observe what
happens.
7. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 using a paper bird with a dry beak.
8. Bring the dry beak close to the surface of the water. Observe what happens.
9. Record your observations.

Important: take photos of your set up.
