Key Message

For Educators:

Learning is a constant process. Amidst inevitable circumstances, the Department of

Education extends its resources and looks for varied ways to cater to your needs and to adapt
to the new system of Education as a fortress of the Learning Continuity Plan. One of the
probable solutions is the use of Teacher-made Educational Modules in teaching.

You are reading the “Technical Drawing I for Grade 7: First Quarter” Alternative
Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on “Uses of Drawing Tools Materials and Equipment” as
written and found in the Strengthened Technical-Vocational Education Program (STVEP)-
Competency-Based Curriculum.

The creation of this module is an effort of competent trainers from Bitoon National
Vocational High School of the Department of Education-Cebu Province during this pandemic
period. In addition, this module is meticulously planned, organized, checked, and verified by
knowledgeable educators to assist you in imparting the lessons to the learners while
considering the physical, social, and economic restraints in the teaching process.

The use of the Teacher-made Educational Module aims to surpass the challenges of
teaching in a new normal education set-up. Through this module, the students are given
independent learning activities, which embodies in the Most Essential Learning Competencies
based on the K-12 Curriculum Competencies, to work on in accordance with their capability,
efficiency, and time. Thus, helping the learners acquire the prerequisite 21st Century skills
needed with an emphasis on utmost effort in considering the whole wellbeing of the learners.

As the main source of learning, it is your top priority to explain clearly how to use this
module to the learners. While using this module, learner’s progress and development should
be recorded verbatim to assess their strengths and weaknesses while doing the activities
presented independently in the safety of their homes. Moreover, you are anticipated to
persuade learners to comply and to finish the modules on or before the scheduled time.

For the Learners:

As a significant stakeholder of learning, the Department of Education researched and

explored innovative ways to address your needs with high consideration on social, economic,
physical, and emotional aspects of your wellbeing. To continue the learning process, DepEd
comes up with an Alternative Delivery mode of teaching using Teacher-Made Educational
Modules.

Technical Drawing for Grade 7: First Quarter Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM)
Module on “Uses of Drawing Tools Materials and Equipment” as written and found in the
Strengthened Technical-Vocational Education Program (STVEP)- Competency-Based
Curriculum.

INFORMATION SHEET

DRAWING TOOLS, MATERIALS, EQUIPMENTS AND THEIR FUNCTIONS

There are a great variety of drawing materials and tools used in mechanical drawing.
The drafting materials and tools discussed in this module includes most of the basic ones but
sufficient enough for your initial understanding about mechanical drawing.

Drawing instruments are used for drawing and designing purposes. Their quality is
very essential if you want to have a good result. Cheaper drawing tools and instruments do
not only provide poor quality results but also do not last long. You have to observe proper
handling and care if you want them. Drawing materials are the things that aids us in drawing
that are consumables. Drawing equipment are those bigger things that aids us in drawing.

1. Drawing paper is a paper that is specially prepared for use

in drafting. It usually comes in four colors: white, cream, light
green and buff. It also comes in different sizes and various
sheet thickness.
• The finish of the paper shows the appearance of the
surface of the paper.
• It can be rough or smooth

2. Ruler is an instrument that is used to draw straight lines and

measure segments. A common ruler has two graduations. It
has centimetre and inches.

3. Pencil is an instrument used for writing and drawing that has a hard-
outer part and a black or colored center part. It is manufactured in
various grades of hardness ranging from 7H which is very soft up to 9H.
The lead pencil is a mixture of graphite, clay and wax. The clay makes
the lead hard. The harder the pencil is, the lighter the line it produced.

H means Hard
Hard Pencils are used for
plans and technical drawing.

B means Soft
Soft Pencils are used for
sketches and artistic drawing.

3
4. Drawing Table is an equipment that may refer to any
ordinary table found in a school shop or in the home with a
height comfortable for working. Its main purpose is to provide
a surface on which one can fasten his/her paper.

5. Drawing Board is an equipment that is necessary if no

drawing bench is available. The usual size of drawing board
is 45.71 cm x 61 cm.

6. T-square is an instrument used for drawing horizontal

lines. It also supports the triangle for vertical or sloping line
drawing.

7. Triangle is an instrument that is use to draw both vertical

and oblique lines.

8. Drawing tape is a material that is used to fasten papers on

the drawing board.

9. Eraser is a material that is a small piece of rubber or other

material that is used to erase something you have written or
drawn. It is also used to correct errors made when writing
with pencil.

10. Protractor is a drawing instrument that is used to measure

or draw angles. It is made of transparent plastic and a half
circle shape. It has two scales: the outside scale which is
from zero to 180 degrees going to the left and the inside
scale which is the opposite scale from 180 – 360 degrees.

11. Compass is an instrument for drawing arcs and circles. There Types of Compass
are two kinds of compass, pencil compass and drawing
compass. The pencil compass has an opening for the
pencil while the drawing compass has a piece of lead fitted
in tone of its legs. Pencil drawing

12. French Curve is an instrument for drawing irregular curves

other than arcs and circles.

presented contents and set of pictures. Links for the sources are found in the reference part of the module.

4
13. Ruling Pen is an instrument for inking drawings. It is
adjustable in order to produce line thickness.

14. Divider is an instrument that is used for dividing lines or distances

into equal parts.

15. Scale is a measuring tool that is used in general drawing. Its

main purpose is to reproduce the dimension in full size or to
reduce or enlarge them on a drawing.

Classifications of Drawing Tools

a) Measuring Tools are used for measuring dimensions, measuring tools are imperative for
implementing any work with precision. They are also used largely for carrying out different
types of measurements.

b) Dividing tools are for comparing sizes, dividing line segments, and measuring distances
on drawings used by draftsman, artist, and other craftsman.

c) Inscribing tools are used for inscribing directly drawings like circles, arc, letters, and
shapes.

d) Straight edge tools used for drawing straight lines, or checking their straightness. If it
has equally spaced markings along its length, it is usually called a ruler.

Care and Maintenance of Drawing Tools

• Do not use compass or divider as pick.

• Never use the edge of straight ledge in cutting with knife or cutter.
• Use clean damp cloth in cleaning the T – Square and Triangle.
• Never use the triangular scale in drawing lines.
• Always use a sharp pencil.

Proper Handling of Drafting Tools & Equipment

• Use a T-Square in drawing horizontal lines.

• Use triangles in drawing vertical and inclined lines.
• Hold the compass by the handle while making circular features.
• Hold the pencil at a 60º angle while drawing.

Safety Reminders for Drawing

• Be sure to keep your hands and instruments clean.

• Never sharpen a pencil over your board while working.
• Avoid eating sticky and wet food or objects while drawing.
• Always listen to the teacher on how a drawing should be done.
• Concentrate on your work in order to perform the work accurately, neatly and
punctually.

Step 3. Draw vertical lines in the first box. In drawing vertical lines, divide the length of
your square (50 mm.) by 5 mm for the distance of your lines. Then proceed in
drawing vertical lines using T-square as a guide at the bottom. If you do not
have T-square, you can use a ruler. Just make sure that your ruler is aligned
at the bottom of our drawing paper.

Step 4. Draw horizontal lines in the second box. In drawing horizontal lines, divide the
width of your square (50 mm.) by 5 mm for the distance of your lines. Then
proceed drawing horizontal lines using T-square. If you do not have T-square,
you may use ruler and triangle together to do it.
