Lesson - 5
Objectives:
At the end of this module, the learner will be able to:

 Identify the different electrical Materials

 Understand the different use and function of electrical materials
 Know the difference between the alligator cable and banana cable

Pre-Activity
Instruction: Guess the name of the following pictures. Write your answer inside the provided box.

Electrical materials are developed and constructed for a special purpose such as to:

o control the flow of current in an electrical circuit

o carry electrical current from the source to the load or current consuming apparatus
o hold and secure wires to its fixtures inside and outside houses and buildings
o Protect the house the buildings, appliances and instruments from any destruction and damage.

Electrical Materials
Bulb – produces light from electricity.

Incandescent bulb – works on the principle of incandescence, a general term meaning light produced

by heat. In an incandescent type of bulb, an electric current is passed through a thin metal filament,
heating the filament until it glows and produces light.

Average life: 1,200 hrs

No mercury
60 watts
90% energy lost to heat

Fluorescent bulb – fluorescent lamp, or fluorescent tube, is a low-

pressure mercury-vapor gas-discharge lamp that uses fluorescence
to produce visible light. An electric current in the gas excites
mercury vapor, which produces short-wave ultraviolet light that
then causes a phosphor coating on the inside of the lamp to glow.

Average life: 8, 000 hrs

Mercury
13-15 watts
Uses 75% less energy

LED Bulb – (Light Emitting Diode) are “directional” light sources, which means they
emit light in a specific direction, unlike incandescent and CFL, which emit light and
heat in all directions. That means LEDs are able to use light and energy more
efficiently in a multitude of applications.

Average life: 25,000 hrs

No mercury
6-8 watts
Uses 84% less energy

lightbulb socket – light socket, lamp socket or lamp holder is a device which mechanically supports
and provides electrical connections for a compatible electric lamp. Sockets allow lamps to be safely
and conveniently replaced (re-lamping). These come in many designs and sizes. They are classified as
flush, Hanging, weather proof and Surface types.

Types of lamp holder

Flush Lamp holder Surface Lamp holder Hanging Lamp holder Weather proof Lamp holder

Convenience Outlet – A device that acts as a convienient source of electrical energy for current
consuming appliances. It is where the male plug is inserted. It maybe single, duplex, triplex or
multiplex.
Single Outlet Duplex or 2 Gang Outlet Triplex Outlet or 3 Gang Multiplex or Multi Gang Outlet

Switch – A device that connects and disconnect the flow of electric current in a circuit.

Single Switch Duplex or 2 Gang Switch Triplex or 3 Gang Switch

Protective Device
Fuse – One time overall protective device. Automatically blows and cuts
the current when overload or short circuit happens.

Circuit Breaker – Protective device used to automatically blow and cuts

the current when trouble in the circuit such as short or overload occurs.

Type of box for Electrical wiring

Junction Box – an octagonal shape electrical material
where the connections and joints are being done. This
could be a metal or PVC (polyvinyl chloride)

Utility Box – a rectangular shape metallic or PVC material.

Which flush convenience outlet and switch are attached.

Electrical Wire – allow the electricity to flow from one device to the next.
Wire is used to carry the flow of electrons.

Stranded wire: use to hold and which is made of multiple strands joined together to form a single
wire. composed of a number of small wires bundled or wrapped together to form a larger
conductor. Stranded wire is more flexible than solid wire of the same total cross-sectional
area. Stranded wire is used when higher resistance to metal fatigue is required.

Solid wire: It is made of single strand wire. also called solid-core or single-

strand wire, consists of one piece of metal wire. Solid wire is useful
for wiring breadboards. Solid wire is cheaper to manufacture than
stranded wire and is used where there is little need for flexibility in the wire.

Conduit/Pipes – is a tube used to protect and route electrical wiring in a building or structure.
Electrical conduit may be made of metal, plastic, fiber, or fired clay. Most conduit is rigid, but
flexible conduit is used for some purposes.

FMC: Flexible Metal Conduit is available with two different wall

thicknesses. Reduced wall flexible conduit can be used in flexible metal
raceway systems for electrical power, communication cables, motor leads,
listed assemblies and wire fixtures and manufactured wiring systems.

CPC: Corrugated plastic conduit (CPC). A kind

of flexible pipe, not only the flexible conduit. Both outside and inside
surface like bellows. Some of them are used for wire and cable
protection, some of them buried under the soil to transfer the rubbish
or sewage (waste water), and some of others are used for air, gas,
soil.

PVC Conduit: are lines of solid tubing used to contain and

protect electrical wiring or cables in power systems. Underground PVC
conduit allows power lines to be buried, rather than above ground, saving
on maintenance. Above ground electrical conduit is also available.

Alligator Cable or Connector – A crocodile clip (also alligator clip) is a sprung metal clip with long,

serrated jaws which is used for creating a temporary electrical connection. This simple mechanical
device gets its name from the resemblance of its jaws to those of an alligator or crocodile.

Most of the alligator cable are in pairs of color red and black. To determine or identify if its positive
or negative. Red stands for (+) sign and black stands for (-) sign.

Banana Cable – A banana connector (commonly banana plug for the male, banana socket

or banana jack for the female) is a single-wire (one conductor) electrical connector used for joining
wires to equipment. are spring-loaded, single-wire electrical test connectors used for joining wire to
electrical test equipment or electrical circuit boards. Banana connectors come in either, Banana
Plugs (male) or Banana Sockets (female).
