ORGANIZATIONAL COMMUNICATION

LEARNING ACTIVITIES FOR CHAPTER 1

Answer the following questions comprehensively

1. In your own understanding, what is the importance of communication in an organization especially in

this time of pandemic?

Communication is critical, particularly during a pandemic when everyone is trapped inside their houses
and unable to interact face to face. As a result, they have meetings using online zoom or any other tool
that can do the same function. They share their aims and future projects here in order to completely
comprehend their members' comprehension and to continue to work effectively in the face of adversity.

2. Based from Mark Koschmann animated video, give a summary of what organizational communication
is. – 50 pts

Communication is organizational because it organizes the activities and interpretations of numerous

individuals, not because it takes place in organizations. It organizes itself into a clear, identifiable shape
and maintains or changes that form for future collective activity. To research organizational
communication, then, is to investigate the social processes that shape our society's dominant
institutions.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES FOR CHAPTER 2

Provide what is asked for:

1. Find articles from a magazine, newspaper or from television news that specifically discuss ethical
areas in modern business. How would you apply the definition of ethics to these articles? (30 pts)

A Washington Post reporter sues the paper and its top editors, claiming discrimination .
If I become a journalist, I will never forget the five journalistic principles. Eliminating discrimination
and harassment.

It should always be a practice to respect people in spite of their differences in race, culture, gender, etc. Anybody
should not be mistreated due to differences and even lack of power.

The 5 Principles of Ethical Journalism

The core principles of ethical journalism set out below provide an excellent base for everyone who
aspires to launch themselves into the public information sphere to show responsibility in how they use
information.
There are hundreds of codes of conduct, charters and statements made by media and professional
groups outlining the principles, values and obligations of the craft of journalism .

Eliminating discrimination and harassment.

It should always be a practice to respect people in spite of their differences in race, culture, gender, etc. Anybody
should not be mistreated due to differences and even lack of power.

Most focus on five common themes:

Five Core Principles of Journalism

1. Truth and Accuracy

Journalists cannot always guarantee ‘truth’, but getting the facts right is the cardinal principle of
journalism. We should always strive for accuracy, give all the relevant facts we have and ensure that
they have been checked. When we cannot corroborate information we should say so.

2. Independence

Journalists must be independent voices; we should not act, formally or informally, on behalf of special
interests whether political, corporate or cultural. We should declare to our editors – or the audience –
any of our political affiliations, financial arrangements or other personal information that might
constitute a conflict of interest.

3. Fairness and Impartiality

Most stories have at least two sides. While there is no obligation to present every side in every piece,
stories should be balanced and add context. Objectivity is not always possible, and may not always be
desirable (in the face for example of brutality or inhumanity), but impartial reporting builds trust and
confidence.

4. Humanity

Journalists should do no harm. What we publish or broadcast may be hurtful, but we should be aware of
the impact of our words and images on the lives of others.

5. Accountability

A sure sign of professionalism and responsible journalism is the ability to hold ourselves accountable.
When we commit errors we must correct them and our expressions of regret must be sincere not
cynical. We listen to the concerns of our audience. We may not change what readers write or say but we
will always provide remedies when we are unfair
2. What are some ethical lapses that you observe among your group (among classmates) that affect your
relationship with each other? (30 pts)

. Lack of communication

. Being humiliated in front of classmates.

. Bullied by your classmate.

. Being a tyrannical Group Lider

Because of their peers' ethical concerns, instead of becoming their buddies, they will instinctively turn
away because you have wounded them.

3. Based from your observation on what is happening in our country in this time of pandemic, cite some
scenarios in our government with ethical dilemma/s. (30 pts

The terrible epidemic that has afflicted the world's population has resulted in an unprecedented inflow
of patients in intensive care units, raising ethical issues not just about triage and withdrawal of life
support choices, but also about family visits and the quality of end-of-life care.

These elements have the potential to unsettle our ethical foundations, intensify our ethical quandaries,
and lead to circumstances of significant caregiver distress. Triage rules have been proposed to be
rationalized in combination with ethical considerations.

Whatever strategy is taken, an imbalance between utilitarian and individual ethics leads to unresolvable
discomforts that caretakers must face. With this in mind, we wanted to highlight several crucial ethical
decisions that ICU caregivers faced during the Covid-19 epidemic, as well as their limitations.

The structured techniques incorporating the appropriate instruments of ethical reflection were
distributed without departing from standard practices, leaving the ultimate decision to intensivists.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS BRIEFLY AND COMPRIHENSIVELY.

1. What are some advantages and disadvantages of technology in an organization?

ADVANTAGE
Encourages Creativity & Innovation:
Many businesses develop technical challenges and reward employees that come up with
innovative ways to use technology. Employees may utilize internet technologies to come up
with new strategies to promote a firm online. Employees may utilize social enterprise
networks like Yammer.com to mingle and engage with other creative employees.

Enhances Human Resource Management:

Human resource managers use the internet to post job vacancies. Candidates who meet the
qualifications will be able to apply for these opportunities online by uploading their resumes.
Technology may also be used to track each employee's performance and productivity at work. Employee
productivity will rise if they are aware that they are being watched.

Saves Time:

Technology can be used to automate tasks at work, this automation will guarantee efficiency and
increase on production at work. Using databases to capture and store information can facilitate quick
decision making at work by employees. Use of internal networks at the workplace can help in sharing of
gadgets like printers and scanners.

Produces Mobility:

The usage of the internet and computers for work has resulted in the abolition of space and time
constraints. Employees may work from anywhere at any time, which allows them to maintain control
over their employment. When using mobile workforce management software, field employees may
access real-time work order information while on the job.

DISADVANTAGE

Causes Distraction at Work:

Some companies have blocked access to social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube at work
because of the distraction they cause. Other technologies which cause distraction at work include
smartphones, computers and virtual meeting applications like Skype. The use of social networks at work
can cause so much distraction and it affects the productivity.

High Maintenance costs:

Small businesses can not afford to hire a full-time technical person, so they resort to monthly tech
contractors who charge them for work done. If business technology tools like computers are not well
maintained, their performance will decrease and the process of buying new computers or any other
business technology can be more expensive.

Makes employees lazy:

Many employees become lazy at work, technology kills their creativity and skills. Many tasks like
calculating sales and tracking inventory are being done with computers. You will find that employees do
not put their brains at work to solve high-end business problems because a computer or software will do
it with no challenge.

Affects Workplace Relationships:

Employees communicate via cell phones, text messages, email or virtual video conferencing tools. This
type of communication technology eliminates face-to-face communication. Employees become more
reserved and self-centered; they get buried into their work which can be of great harm to a business.

It’s Risky:

All employees in important decision making positions will need access to private business information.
Many employees come with flash drives at work, so they can transfer critical business information and
use it for their own personal gains. This can pose as a threat, because it can be very difficult to monitor
the usage and privacy of this information.

2. What are the challenges of technology in an organization in this time of pandemic.

For several months, school doors throughout the world have been shuttered to stem the spread of the
COVID-19 epidemic. During this crisis, we have witnessed an extraordinary amount of large-scale
attempts to assist distant learning with technology. At the same time, the crisis has highlighted the
problems of technology in education, including various disparities beginning with a lack of access to
computers and other technologies.
