(POAP) VIRTUAL TRAINING ON TOWARDS EFFECTIVE
MANAGERIAL COMPETENCIES

The Personnel Officers Association of the Philippines (POAP) aims to foster active interest
in sound public personnel management. It serves as a clearing- house for information on
relevant personnel management methods and techniques. It hopes to safeguard and
vitalize the merit principle in the government service through the development of a corps
of well- informed, forward- looking, responsible personnel management/ HRM officers,
administrators, and practitioners.

TRAINING TOPICS

The training topics were discussed as follows:

Day 1:
1) Introductory Session: Why Effective Managerial Competencies?
2) Session 1: Towards Effective Managerial Competencies?
3) Session 2: Defining Change and Work Values
Day 2:
1) POAP and Re-Cap for Day 1
2) Session 3: The Function, Roles and Skills of Managers
3) Session 4: Understanding Work Behavior and Performance
4) Session 5: Approaches to Employee Motivation
5) Session 6: Communication and Conflict

Day 3:
1) POAP and Re-Cap for Day 2
2) Session 7: Leading Organization Change
3) Session 8: Teamwork and Productivity
4) Session 9: Public Service Excellence
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE TRAINING

The goals for this training are firstly, to examine how managerial competencies of a
manager in organizations influence the performance of a team and to determine the most
important skills of these competencies. Secondly, it aims to identify the managerial skills
that a manager needs in order to effectively manage their teams and compare these
skillsets.

The attendees listened to the series of lectures and afterwards participated in group
sessions. For Day 1, the training required the participants to submit an evaluation of the
Vision/Mission of their agencies. For Day 2, the training required the participants to submit
a report on their top 3 great leaders.
