My learning insights of the Action Research Webinar

When I heard right from the resource speaker, Mr. Cristopher H. Punzalan, that such
webinar cannot be completely accomplish its agenda regarding writing action research in a single
webinar since it usually takes some times like a series of webinars, I appreciated how the webinar
was given title “Understanding the Essentials in Writing an Action Research” which made it, for
me, more easier to understand and appreciate the purpose of the concisely developed agenda of
the day. The aim of the topic was strongly supported by a faculty and the dean of the College of
Education who brought some introductory and inspiring phrases such as research is “A roadless
travel” by sir Asotigue and that research is “Needed by teachers to be updated and competitive
globally” by ma’am Dr. Sarip. The resource speaker had inserted two ice breakers or should I say
pretests for him to weigh up our prior knowledge regarding research.
Having basic and unclear thoughts with regards to action research is not enough for me to
have a confident in conducting one, but then it was supported with so many essential things about
the said topic by sir Punzalan. So, the first question rose to start with was why we should conduct
action research, it is actually for us to conduct interventions for certain problems identified in a
specific context or setting. Moreover, research cannot be done instantly as it requires systematic
procedures including in depth analyzation and to come up with results, in other words, a problem
is solved by research. The three kinds of research were contrasted in detailed such that the Basic
Research (Fundamental) contributes to the development of knowledge or theory, the Applied
Research is socially useful and is present if you’re going to introduce a technology as part of the
activity to give opportunity to a system to solve a problem, and lastly, the Action Research solves
an immediate and specific problem. To give the spotlight, Action Research was further discussed
by the resource speaker including Action Research in Education Sector, Issues in Philippine Sector
for Possible Action Research, Parts of an Action Research, and Publishing an Action Research. The
action research was defined briefly as any research into practice undertaken which indicates
involvement of later application or intervention. Mr. Punzalan gave reminder that as long as you
generate new idea, knowledge, or data, you can still be acknowledged for making research
regardless of the fact whether you met your objectives or not, hence, it can still be modified which
portrays the rounded cycle of action research.
In addition to, action research is therefore identified as here and now research which helps
to overcome discerned obstacles. Giving conclusion to the topic, it was also explained how
publishing an action research is done which is considered as the basis to distinguish a true
research, “Research will not be a research without publishing or disseminating it in the body of
knowledge” said Mr. Punzalan. Despite of the technical error that was encountered during the
delivery of topic, Mr. Punzalan firmly concluded the lecture where ACT, stands or Action, Changes,
and Things, was considered to be very significant things to be mindful of when conducting Action
Research.
