B. Lesson Proper
“What was our topic in our previous
discussion?”
“We discussed the story “A Day in the
Country” by Anton Chekhov.”
“What was the story all about?”
“It’s about a little girl named Fyokla
and his brother Danilka walking around
the forest with a witty man named
Terenty.”
“What were they doing while
walking around the forest?”
“They’re talking about the nature.
Danilka asks questions about nature
while Terenty answers them.”
“What is the moral lesson of the
story?”
“The story tells us to appreciate the
nature just like how Terenty appreciates
“Very good! Do you have any it.”
questions about our previous
topic?”

“Are we ready to move on to our “None so far.”

next topic?”

“Good, but before that, I’d like you “Yes, sir.”

to look at these sentences.”

 Jamie put the coat on

because Jamie was cold.
 The dog is a Labrador and
the dog is thirsty.
 Xavier ate the yellow snakes
because he likes yellow
snakes. (students will read the sentences)

“What do you think is wrong with

these sentences?”
“The nouns are repeated in all the
sentences.”
“Very well noticed. In all these
sentences, the nouns are repeated.
Who would like to revise the
sentences for them to make more
sense?”
 Jamie put the coat on because
he was cold.
 The dog is a Labrador and it is
thirsty.
 Xavier ate the yellow snakes
because he likes them.
“Very good, now what words did
you use in place of the nouns?”

“Correct, we used pronouns. What “Pronouns.”

exactly is a pronoun?”
“A pronoun is a word that can be used
instead of a noun.”
“Exactly. Pronouns can be
classified to multiple kinds. Today,
we’re going to discuss the personal
pronouns. Please read the definition
in the board.”
“A personal pronoun is a pronoun that
is associated primarily with a particular
person, in the grammatical sense.”
“As what the name suggests,
personal pronouns are mostly used
on nouns pertaining to people.
However, personal pronouns can
also substitute for animals and
objects. Examples of personal
pronouns are I, you, he, she, we,
they, me, you, him, her, us, them.
Personal pronouns can function as a
subject, object or a possessive
pronoun.”

*post chart at the board*

“When a personal pronoun

functions as a subject pronoun, the
personal pronoun is substituting for
the subject in the sentence. For
example, the sentence written on
the board.”
“We told him he will be playing his
role.”
“What’s the subject in this
sentence?”
“We.”
“As we can see, the subject “we” is
a pronoun substituting for a group
of people who did an action. “We”
is the subject of the sentence, and is
therefore a subject pronoun. Can
you give another sentence using a
subject pronoun?”
(students will give examples)
“Very good, now if a personal
pronoun functions as an object of a
verb or an object of the preposition,
it’s called an object pronoun. For
example, let’s get back to the
sentence earlier.”
“We told him he will be playing his
role.”
“In this sentence, the pronoun ‘him’
is an object of the verb ‘told’. A
group of people told him that he
will be playing the part. The
pronoun him is being affected by
the verb told, so the pronoun him is
an object of the verb and therefore
an object pronoun.”
