Reading
People celebrate the festival of La Mama Negra in the city of Latacunga in Ecuador
every year in September and November. This festival started in 1742 when the volcano
Cotopaxi erupted. The local people believed that the Virgin saved the city of Latacunga.
At that time, there were African people working in mines in the area so a Black Mother,
or the Mama Negra, was chosen to represent the Virgin. She represents the mother of
Jesus.
In this festivity there are dancers with pre-Colombian costumes and traditional musical
groups. The festivity finishes when La Mama Negra arrives on a horse, carrying a doll
that is her child. She throws milk to the crowd for good luck..
