The two halves of this shawl are knit from the edge to the middle and are then Kitchner stitched together. Any weight
yarn can be used though I think it is better suited to yarns on the finer side. I used about 1400 yards of handspun, 2 ply
laceweight yarn with size 3 needles but I knit very loosely. Both the length and the width of the shawl can be adjusted.
The width can be changed by multiples of 18 stitches. The length can be adjusted by changing the number of pattern
repeats in any or all of the pattern sections. The yarn I used was a gradient so I changed stitch when the color changed in
the yarn.

There are four different stitch patterns used in each half of the shawl. Starting at the edge is Sea Foam which is based on
the classic Old Shale or Old Shell pattern. I designed it (or probably rediscovered it) to look like the edge of foam that
forms on a wave as it comes onto the beach. The next stitch pattern is an old Shetland pattern called Print o’ the Wave
followed by an extended version of it called Elaborated Print o’ the Wave which reminds me of kelp strands undulating
in the water. Finally, I designed the last stitch pattern, Zigzag Fish, because you shouldn’t have a sea with no fish.

Cast on a multiple of 18 stitches plus 15 more.I used 7 repeats so I cast 141 stitches. If you use more or less repeats that
will change the number of times you repeat the stitch patterns in each row. Knit the first 5 rows and then knit the Sea
foam chart as many times as you like. I repeated it 3 times.

The number of stitches in the repeat section now changes from 18 to 17 via the transition rows which are only knitted
once.

Then on to the Print o’ the Wave section.I repeated the

Print ‘o the Wave pattern eleven times. Stop after row
10 of the last repeat.

All wrong side rows are K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, Purl to last 5
stitches, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1 for the rest of the shawl.

The next section is the Elaborated Print o’ the Wave section which I repeated 4
times.

Again, all wrong side rows are K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, Purl to last 5 stitches, K1,
P1, K1, P1, K1.

If you forgot to stop after row 10 of your last repeat of the Print o’ the Wave
pattern, don’t panic and don’t take it out. The last two rows of the Print o’ the
Wave pattern are exactly the same as the first two rows of the Elaborated Print
o’ the Wave pattern so just start the Elaborated Print ‘o the Wave chart at row
3.

A transition section is next. It is knitted only once.

The last section is the Zigzag Fish section. I did 2 full repeats of this section. You can change the number of repeats and
stop either after row 17 or 35. Make sure that you end the second half on the same row.

When first half of the shawl is completed, place the live

stitches on an extra set of needles. When both halves are
complete, put wrong (purl) sides together and use a
Stockinette Kitchner stitch to attach the two halves.
