POINTS LEARNT DURING IDC, IFT, IFC PROCESS Date - 31-07-2015

Sl. No. Points regarding arrangement of structure Sketches/ Remarks

Cross frame is to be similar as far as possible in terms

of geometry and member properties.

I) If one cross frame is fully braced, then try other cross

sections also fully braced.

II) If one cross frame is partially braced or knee braced 1 2

then other cross frames will have to be like that only.

III) If we are going with moment portal for one cross

frame, then other cross sections should be moment
frame with same column sections. MCH MCH
If we provide bracings in other cross frames, then
1 column sections will have to be reduced accordingly. If 3 4
column sections will be same as moment frame, you
will have to show valid reason.

MCH MCH
Notes -
a) For case 5, we will have to check whether bending
moment value of connecting beam is exceeding the 5
capacity in standard drawing. If exceeded then we can
go for case 4. That will reduce the developd end
moment.

b) According to Bala Sir, the end bays must look like

similar. However, other intermediate bays should be
similar in terms of geometry.

Near staircase we can shorten height of column and

structural elements at the last flight location. Last flight
may be supported over propped cantilever beam. We
2
will consider that in horizontal direction the beam is
held by stringer itself. In that case stringer need to
check for the corresponding load coming on it.

In plan bracing, diagonal members and small straight

3 members should be angle or tee section as reqd. But
the small straight member must not be UB or UC
section if not reqd. otherwise.

Page - 1 of 5
In plan bracing, both top chord and bottom chord
should be single span member such that the horizontal
truss action will play into role in effective way. If one of
4 the chord member is cosisted of small piece members
then while buckling, the piece members will not act
together and the truss behaviour will not be expressed
fully.

Pipe support in civil scope will have to be modelled in

5 staad file and load has be put on the top of T-support/
goal post.

I) If pipe support is not in our scope, then we can

model a dummy T -support and will apply load on the
top of T-support/ goal post.
6
II) Or we can put that pipe load directly on structural
beam along with biaxial moment on the beam due to
horizontal load.

In both the case, sl. No. 5 & 6, we will have to check

7 the torsional capacity of the beam. Refer excel file sent
by mail. Accordingly we will have to choose the section.

For moment connection, Madhavan Sir asked to

release 'MY' at end of beam. But by doing that,
8 insatbility problem is coming in staad. So we are not
following that (discussed with him). For that case, we
are not releasing anything at that end.

For plan bracing, β angle for angle section is 45°. For

9
Tee section it is 90°.

For choosing section, we must be aware of the

connection point of view. When two beams are getting Refer shear connection table in
10 connected to one primary beam it has to checked
standard drawing regarding values.
whether TOS to first bolt centre of two beams are
same. Otherwise connection will be impossible.

Plan bracing connection to column point must be

11
completely avoided.

Sl. No. Points regarding support in staad Sketches/ Remarks

1 All supports must be pinned support in staad file.

We can go for one way fixed support if it is not possible

to provide bracing in that direction and it is moment
2
portal in that direction. Other direction we can keep as
pinned.

Sl. No. Points regarding Load Sketches/ Remarks

Wind load on stringer in transverse direction and F = qs x Cp x A x Ca

longitudinal direction must be taken in staad.

For transverse direction, area = Overall Depth of

1 stringer section x Length
In both cases, half load is to be
applied on each side of stringer
For longitudinal direction, area = Flange width of supporting beam.
stringer section x Inclined Length (exposed to wind
load) x 2 (for 2 nos. stringer)

Wind load on non-modeled part like equipment, pipe

2 etc. is to be calculated and to be applied on staad
model.

Wind load due to fireproofing thickness is to be Refer excel file prepared by

3
considered. Sindhuja.

Sl. No. Points regarding Design parameters in staad Sketches/ Remarks

For LY, UNL -- we are following as below :

I) If on floor, beam is at braced location then maximum

unsupported span in horizontal plane will be LY & UNL
for that beam.

II) If beam is not in braced bay and there is no

continuous beam in perpendicular direction in between
1 the length, then LY & UNL is to be considered from grid
to grid or column to column.

III) If beam is not in braced bay and there is continuous

beam (UB or UC, not angle section) in perpendicular
direction in between the length, then LY & UNL is to be
considered from grid to that continuous beam.

2 For fully braced frame, KZ and KY for column are 1.0.

For partially braced frame, KY and KZ for column are
3
1.5 (whicever is applicable at a time).

For moment frame, KZ value must be calculated from

4
excel file.

Page - 3 of 5
LY and LZ for column will be decided as per the
5 member continuity by means of lateral tie to other
frame or to floor level.

Sl. No. Points regarding base plate, shear key, anchor bolt Sketches/ Remarks

Base plate size is to be checked along with position of

shear key and anchor bolt such that any of this item
does not foul with each other. There must be space
1
available for pocket for shear key and anchor bolt . If
the pockets are overlapping, we may have to change
the bolt centres and shear key size accordingly.

We are providing bolts in clearance holes that means,

the hole size is much bigger than the nominal bolt size.
2 In that case, bolt will carry only tension. It should not
be designed to carry tension and shear together. For
shear, we will have to provide shear key.

Sl. No. Points regarding drawings Sketches/ Remarks

Handrail to be shown in proper way. If there is any gap

1
or continuity has to be mentioned properly in drawing.

Grating span direction has to be correct. Along with it,

2 the representative symbol should match with the span
direction.

If there is small gap between stair flight floor, that must

3 be filled with grating. In drawing, grating must be
shown over that gap.
