WHAT’S NEW

a. Why is it important to understand how you write chemical name of
compounds? chemical formulas? structural formulas? and models?

Chemical name the primary function of chemical nomenclature is to ensure that a

spoken or written chemical name leaves no ambiguity concerning which chemical
compound the name refers to:
Chemical formulas are very important when trying to find information about a
chemical compound because they provide what elements are present and also the
proportion of the atoms of elements found in a chemical substance or compound.
Structural formulas identify the location of chemical bonds between the atoms of a
molecule. A structural formula consists of symbols for the atoms connected by short
lines that represent chemical bonds—one, two, or three lines standing for single,
double, or triple bonds.
Molecular model is a better way to represent a compound and can be categorized
as a ball and stick molecular model and space filling molecular model. A ball and
stick molecular model represents atoms present in the compound as balls and the
chemical bonds between atoms as sticks.

WHAT IS IT

Write the formula of the following compounds, given the name of the
compound:
i. Silver nitrate AgNO3
ii. Potassium iodide KI
iii. Nitrogen dioxide NO₂
iv. Barium chloride BaCl2
v. Hydrobromic acid HBr

WHAT’S MORE

a. Ionic compounds – made up of a cation and an anion. They are named by

giving the name of the cation first, followed by the name of the anion.
Give the name of the following compounds:
Sodium iodide _i. NaI
Magnesium dichloride__ii. MgCl2
iron sulfide___iii. FeS
potassium oxide__iv. K2O

b. Molecular compounds – made up of two non-metals. They are named by

giving the name of the first nonmetal and then that of the second nonmetal
modified by the ending -ide. Molecular compounds are usually gases.
Give the name of the following compounds:
Hydrogen chloride__i. HCl
carbon dioxide__ii. CO2
Sulfur trioxide __iii. SO3

b. Ternary compounds – made up of three elements. The naming of ternary

compounds follows the same rule as that of the binary ionic compound: the
name of the cation is given first, followed by the name of the anion.
Give the name of the following compounds:
Sodium nitrate___i. NaNO3
BARIUM CHROMATE__ii. BaCrO4
POTASSIUM SULFATE__iii. K2SO4
3. Acids – yield hydrogen ions in aqueous solutions.
a. Binary acids – composed of hydrogen and another element, usually a
nonmetal. The first part of the name starts with the prefix hydro- followed by
the name of the element, modified by the ending –ic. The second part
consists of the word ‘acid’. Name = hydro-(root name of element) -ic + acid.
Give the name of the following Binary acids:
Hydrogen chloride___i. HCl
Hydrogen sulfide___ii. H2S
hydroiodic acid___iii. HI

b. Ternary acids – made up of hydrogen and an anion, usually containing

oxygen. The first part of the name consists of the root word of the name of the
element, modified by the ending –ic. The second part consists of the word
‘acid’. If there is another acid with the same atoms, the suffix –ous is used to
denote the one with less number of atoms. Name =(root name of element) -ic
(or –ous) + acid.

Give the name of the following ternary acids:

Nitric acid__i. HNO3
Nitrous acid__ii. HNO2
Sulfuric acid__iii. H2SO4
Sulfurous acid__iv. H2SO3
Phosphoric acid__v. H3PO4

4.After familiarizing with the naming of compounds, it would be easy to write the
formula of the compound. Emphasize that in writing the formula, the total positive
charges of the cations should be equal to the total of the negative charges of the
anion. The net charge should be zero.
Write the formula of the following compounds, given the name of the
compound:
AgNO3_i. Silver nitrate
KI_Ii. Potassium iodide
NO₂_iii. Nitrogen dioxide
BaCl2_iv. Barium chloride
HBr_v. Hydrobromic acid
