Introducing this year’s theme...
Activism & Leadership For Change!
Generation Z activism & leadership is on the rise globally and locally. It began in
2009 with Malala Yousafzai (23 years old) who blogged about her concerns of not
being able to go to school because of the increasing military activity. In 2018,
Greta Thunberg (17 years old) went viral alongside thousands of school kids who
skipped school to march in front of the parliament and demanded more actions
against climate change.
In the local sphere, we have seen Faye Simajuntak (18 years old) who initiated
Rumah Faye to help the victims of child abuse & trafficking. In Bali, we have The
Wisjen sisters (19 years old & 17 years old) who created ByeByePlastic to increase
environmental awareness in young generation. Not to mention, in 2019 there was
the biggest student demonstration since 1999 that united Indonesian students
from all over the islands to protest against controversial bills.
