DEPRESSION
INTRODUCTION
Speech Goal: To inform my audience of the meaning, causes, effects and treatment for
major depression.
Central Idea: Coping with Depression
Thesis Statement: Depression is a debilitating mental illness, however, there are several
ways to cope with this mentality.
(transition: “Firstly, what is depression? How can one tell they have it…?”)
BODY:
I. DEPRESSION
(transition: Since we have gotten into -depression is, it’s time to explore
some causes of depression.)
Depression -disorder that can seriously affect -body, mood, and thoughts
of a person.
The feelings associated with Depression -persistent and chronic
According to www.psychlogyinfo.com, depression is often caused by a
stressful life event, illnesses, -certain drugs -medication -relationship
problems, work stress, family crisis, financial problems, or any unwelcome
life change.
Depression is more than just the normal, temporary felling of sadness and
hopelessness
Some of the depression symptoms include:
i. Not enjoying - activities in your life
ii. Problems concentrating
iii. Poor memory – thought & speech
iv. Having trouble making decisions
v. Changes in eating habits - weight
vi. Difficulty going to work - daily responsibilities
vii. Feeling guilt and hopelessness - life is worth living?
viii. Thoughts of death -suicide
IV. TREATMENT
Depression is usually treated successfully with professional counseling
and prescribed medication.
People with depression can be treated as outpatients or in some cases a
person has to be hospitalized.
According to www.health.org.com, here are some prevention:
i. Try to be with other people -better than being alone.
ii. Participate in activities -make you feel better.
iii. Exercise.
iv. Going to a movie -ballgame, -participating in religious activities
-help.
v. Let your family and friends help.
CONCLUSION
o Depression - very stressful and serious disease - should always protect ourselves -
getting it.
o Always ask - family and friends - help.
o They can be - most helpful people - life.
o Get treatment - soon as you can.
o Remember - loved ones - there for you.
o Don’t hesitate.
o Depression - a very dangerous disease - can affect - loved ones, especially you.
