Chapter 1

The Problem

Introduction

Bealer, B. K. (2001) said that Coffee, tea, and cola are the three of the most

popular drinks in the world. They differ in taste and have different aromas but all of them

contain significant amounts of caffeine. From the staggering demand for these drinks, it

is easy to see that caffeine, the common ingredient found among them, must be the

substance with almost universal appeal that may have stimulated people for many

millennia.

Brown Y. (2020), Caffeine is the most widely studied drug throughout history,

yet, some individuals don’t know much about it. Caffeine has long been used by different

generations for centuries. It can also be found in a great deal of foods and beverages

which can be consumed daily. Most people nowadays think of caffeine negatively and

only see it as a kind of addictive drug but little do they know about the various positive

effects that it can also provide for health benefits.

Gavin, M. L. (2014), In the twentieth century, medical studies have credibly

linked caffeine to improving performance of simple tasks, impairing short-term memory,

improving athletic performance, alleviating migraine, relieving asthma, and so on. Some

researchers have even found that caffeine improves mood and performance only when

people are aware that they have consumed it.

Abdullah M. A. et. al, (2014), Students may be more likely to consume caffeine

due to busy schedules and assignments, social influence, and lack of sleep. Students may

also increase caffeine consumption if it is readily available on campus or part of their

dining plan. The majority of people, especially the students who are being bombarded

with numerous requirements together with their corresponding deadlines during this

trying time rely more on caffeine because they believe that caffeine can help them to

focus and maintain their alertness and continue doing their task without getting feeling

fatigue because the effects of caffeine to their body and to their brain that caffeine made

it stimulate. They consume foods and beverages with significant amounts of caffeine

such as coffee and or energy drinks to help them stay awake and focused to finish the

tasks at hand.

Caffeine is usually consumed by adolescent for purposes like, studying for instant

energy. Though natural sources of caffeine are coffee, tea and cocoa beverage. Although

soft drinks and energy drinks are more popular among adults. There is evidence that a

few people are aware of the health hazards related to overuse of caffeinated beverage.

Drinking or eating energy drink or other beverage with high percentage of caffeine leads

to addiction. The majority of people do not know the proper definition of caffeinated or

non-caffeinated beverages, this lack of information may lead to serious health issues.

In people’s daily life it is inevitable to drink coffee because it’s keeping them

awake and gives alertness during work. Researchers say that the first use of caffeine as a

stimulant date back to stone age, that was people discovered that chewing leaves or seed

of some plants makes them less tired and promotes alertness, many centuries had passed
before people found out that soaking those plants in a hot water make for a stronger

effect.

Caffeine stimulates brain and helps are body to not getting feeling fatigue easily

that is why students depends on caffeine because of that. Students believe that caffeine

has it big impact to them specially to their academic performance. That is why students

depending to caffeine they drinking coffee, energy drink and eating food with high

caffeine for them to stay focused and alert while doing their school task and before

attending to their respective class (online class).
