What is Ballroom Dancing?
Ballroom dancing is a partnership dance where couples, using step-
patterns, move rhythmically, expressing the characteristics of music.
Ballroom dancing consists of two styles: the Smooth, or Standard,
and the Rhythm, or Latin.
The Smooth, Standard style focuses on the elegance, grace and
fluidity of movement. Dancers rotate in a counter-clockwise direction,
moving around the entire floor.
The Rhythm, Latin dance style Latin dances are generally faster-paced,
more sensual and have more rhythmic expression.
The couple is constantly moving on the dance floor, transitioning
from one place to the next in a fixed pattern. The Foxtrot, Waltz,
Tango, Viennese Waltz and Quickstep are danced in this manner.
What are the difference between International and American
style of dancing?
The American Smooth style of dance is loosely similar to the International
Standard style of dance, with the main difference being
that Smooth uses more separated and open figures, and International Standard is
exclusively made up of closed figures.
What is the difference between standard dance and Latin dance?
In the standard dances, the couple maintains contact hold, whereas in Latin American
dances, non-contact positions are generally taken.

enjoyment of the partners - rather than to meet the criteria of a dance school
or an audience. Social dancing is danced for enjoyment, socialization,
recreation and health.

sometimes called social ballroom dancing.
Ballroom dancing is meant to be danced in ballrooms, and social
dancing is suited for dancing on small or crowded floors, such as dance
floors found in restaurants and pubs.
