ASKING FOR A DANCE Dance with as many as possible. Decline a dance in a polite but straightforward manner. Do not be discouraged if declined. 7. ON THE FLOOR Follow the line of dance to minimize collisions. Be cautions when getting onto the floor. Share the floor with others. Leave the floor courteously and cautiously. Do not perform aerials and choreography unless authorized. Leave entrances unobstructed. What is Social Dances? Social dances is dances intended primarily to get to know other people in attendance to a certain social function. They called ballroom dances. They are usually performed in pairs, male and female, but may also be performed in groups. The term ‘ballroom dancing’ is called derived from the word “ball”, which in turns originates from the Latin word ballare which means ‘to dance’. There are two classifications of social dances; 1. Latin American Dances It can be determined through the costume worn by the performers. It revealing, tight-fitting, sexy and sophisticated in nature. The movement shows rhythmic expression, sensual, and spicy style.

Cha-cha-cha Dance – Country of Origin: Cuba It is lively, fun, cheeky and playful dance. The music for the cha-cha-cha dance is energetic and with a steady beat. The music may involve complex polyrhythms. 2. Mambo Dance – Country of Origin: Cuba It is recognized as a fast and spicy dance. The Cuban motion, staccato movement and expression of rhythm through the body is not acceptable. 3. Salsa Dance – Country of Origin: Cuba It is a combination of many Latin and Afro- Caribbean dances whose movements was coming from in the Cuban Son, cha-cha-cha, mambo and other dance forms. 4. Merengue – Country of Origin: Dominican Republic It is described as a fun, fast and easy dance made up of simple steps. It is composed of a non-progressive dance, but can also travel counter-clockwise around the floor. 5. Swing – Country of Origin: USA It is known as an energetic style of dancing in which a dancer often lifts, spins and flips his/her partners. The five Modern Standard Dances 1. Slow Waltz – Country of Origin: Austria A dance in ¾ time and is characterized by its graceful rise and fall motion. It is a dance primarily in closed position to the music of the same name. 2. Tango – Country of Origin: Argentina A ballroom dance of Argentina origin in 2/4 time with a basic pattern of step-step-step- step-close and characterized by long pauses and stylized body positions. 3. Viennese Waltz – Country of Origin: Austria The Viennese waltz is a rotary dance where the dancers are constantly turning either in a clockwise (“natural”) or counter-clockwise (“reverse”) direction interspersed with non- rotating change steps to switch between the directions of rotation. A true Viennese waltz consists only of turns and change steps. Dance with a step, slide, and step in ¾ time. 4. Foxtrot – Country of Origin: US A ballroom dance in 4/4 time, with alteration of two slow and two quick steps. A duple time with slow walking steps, quick running steps, and the step of the two-step: also the music for this dance. 5. Quickstep – Country of Origin: USA A light-hearted dance of the standard ballroom dances. The movement of the dance is a fast and powerfully flowing and sprinkled with syncopations. The upbeat melodies that quickstep is dance to make it suitable for both formal and informal events. The Fundamental or Basic Position of Arms and Feet in Social Dance 1ST POSITION – Heels close together toes a part with an angle of about 45 degrees. Both arms raising a circle in front of chest with a finger tips about an inch apart. 2ND POSITION – Feet a part sideward of about pace distance. Both arms raise sideward with a graceful curve at a shoulder level. 3RD POSITION – Heel of one foot close to in stop of other foot. One arm raise sideward as a second position, other arm raise over head. 4TH POSITION – One foot in front of the other foot of a pace distance. One arm raise in front as a first position, other arm raise over head. 5TH POSITION – Heel of front foot close to big toe of rare foot. Both arms raise over head.
