EXPERIMENT NO. 8
TEST FOR HAIR
IOBJECTIVE:

To distinguish human hair from animal hair.

II. MATERIALS:
Human hair, Animal hair, Microscope, glass slide, glass slip III
DISCUSSION:
Hair is a filamentous biomaterial that grows out of the pores of the skin and
covers different parts of the body except for the palm and the soles of the feet. It
is made out of keratinous material which make up nails. It consists of a bulb, root
and shaft. Of interest for DNA test is the hair bulb which contains living epithelial
cells. But even the hair shaft without the bulb can provide material information
regarding its source.
Hair are trace evidences that could be transferred by contact of two persons or
with the environment. It is possible to differentiate human hair from animal hair
by way of their structure, scale pattern and color distribution. But even among
samples of human hair, it is also possible to tell one sample apart from another by
their characteristics.
II. Procedure:
1. Preliminary Examination
Get human and animal hair from the specimen collected and observe:
Photographed each specimen.

1. Microscopic Examination

A. Anatomical Parts – On a separate slide, place human and animal hair. Add
a drop of water and cover. Illustrate observation and label the three
anatomical parts.

B. Medulla – Place human and animal hair on a separate slide. Add a drop
of water and cover with glass slip. Observe and draw your observation.
