➔The table below shows all the calculations needed for the calculation section:
➔ The dimensionless number U/V is the ratio of the Pelton wheel speed to the jet speed. Thus, it
represents how much of the jet speed is converted into Pelton wheel speed. Therefore, it represents
the efficiency of transmission of speed from the jet to the Pelton wheel.
➔𝜂 = 2(1 − 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝛽)(𝜑)(1 − 𝜑) where 𝜑 = 𝑈/𝑉 Equation 1
And 𝜂 = (𝜏 × 𝑅𝑃𝑀 × 2𝜋)/(60 × 𝑃𝑄) Equation 2
Solve for 𝜏 after equating equation 1 and 2, we get:
𝑈 𝑈
60𝑃𝑄(1 − 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝛽) (𝑉 ) (1 − 𝑉 )
𝜏=

3-What does the theoretical analysis of question 2 tell us about how (in terms of load and
speed) to operate the Pelton wheel if we want to maximize power? And efficiency?
➔ According to the plots of question 2, the power increases with the increase of the ratio U/V
until it reaches a maximum at U/V equal 0.5 for both pressures (for theoretical results), and 0.47
for both pressures (for experimental results). Therefore, it is recommended to use these ratios to
maximize the power and efficiency.
4-Pelton wheels are devices used to convert hydraulic power to electrical power. Assuming
that a similar Pelton wheel was installed on a river with water velocity equal to that found in
the experiment. Moreover, assuming that the flow in the river channel is friction-less.
Calculate the hydraulic power of the river, and the output power of the Pelton wheel. Assume
an electric efficiency of the electric generator to be 90%.
➔ Using Bernoulli’s equation: 𝜌𝑔𝐻 = (0.5)𝜌𝑉 2
➔ The pressure P=(0.5)𝜌𝑉 2
➔P1 = 40024.4045 Pa, P2 =99955.6605 Pa
Therefore, the hydraulic power of the river is:
P1-Hydraulic= 40024.4045Q1
P2-Hydraulic=99955.6605Q2
Poutput-1=𝜂𝑃𝑒𝑙𝑡𝑜𝑛 × P1 − Hydraulic
Poutput-2=𝜂𝑃𝑒𝑙𝑡𝑜𝑛 × P2 − Hydraulic
➔ Take the maximum Pelton efficiency to be 0.7620679 for P1=0.4 bar, and 0.833626 for P2=1
bar.
➔ Poutput-1=𝜂𝑃𝑒𝑙𝑡𝑜𝑛 × P1 − Hydraulic = 0.7620679*40024.4045Q1=30501.31389Q1 watt.
➔ Poutput-2=𝜂𝑃𝑒𝑙𝑡𝑜𝑛 × P2 − Hydraulic = 0.833626*99955.6605Q2= 83325.63744Q2 watt.
5-. A village that needs 10 MW of electric power is to be provided with electricity from a
Pelton wheel construction. Estimate the flow of a river that may provide power to this village.
You may refer to question 4.
➔ Pelectric-1 =0.9*30501.31389Q1= 27451.1825Q1 watt
➔ Pelectric-2 =0.9*83325.63744Q2= 74993.0737Q2 watt
10×106
➔Q1=27451.1825 =364.283 m3/s
10×106
➔ Q1=74993.0737 =133.3456 m3/s
6-Based on your observations in questions 4 and 5, is it effective to use the Pelton Wheel to
generate electricity?
We need a very high flow rate to generate 10MW of electric power assuming 90% efficiency.
Amazon River has the greatest water flow in the world, according to some resources. Amazon
discharges about 200,000 m^3/s into the Atlantic Ocean.
➔P = (0.5) ρV2 = 1881.8 𝑃𝑎
➔𝑃river = 1881.8 𝑄 = 376.36 𝑀w
Nile river, for example, discharges about 3000 m^3/s and using the same process we end up with
a power generation approximately 4000 w which is much lower than what we need.
Therefore, the use of Pelton wheel is very effective in rivers having high flow rate.
