I Am Malala Introduction: Debatable Questions

Name: Jyotika Maharaj

Directions: For each statement below, answer Part 1 with your opinion. Be sure to explain your opinion
as thoroughly as you can. Answer Part 2 in class after you have discussed with your classmates.

1. It is better to get hurt helping someone than to not help someone so that you won’t get
hurt.
Part 1 Your Opinion:
It is certainly not better to get hurt by helping others than not helping someone to avoid injury
to yourself. This is because everyone can be afraid from being injured and it really depends on
the situation if it can cause grave death or shallow wounds. If the situation happened to be not
severe, it is better to help someone, if not, than it would be recommended to stay away so
there won’t be to injured people instead of one.
Part 2 Changes to your opinion:
I believe that it depends on the situation if it was between life and death, however I think that
just because you’re not willing to get hurt by helping someone else, doesn’t mean you are
selfish.
2. Real change can only be created by people who already have power and influence.
Part 1 Your Opinion:
This is an untrue statement since everyone has the power of words and depending on how they
use them, they can change or influence others. Already having power and influence doesn’t
mean that others are limited to make a change. We all have the right to stand up for our beliefs
whether people agree or disagree and change only comes from that.
Part 2 Changes to your opinion:
I still disagree with this statement not only because everyone has the right to stand up, but also
because you are never limited to make a change whether it is big or small.
3. If you truly believe in a cause, you should be willing to die for that cause.
Part 1 Your Opinion:
You don’t necessarily have to die for that cause, nevertheless you should be willing to die for
your beliefs no matter what the costs are as it is your opinion and you should not be questioned
because of it.
Part 2 Changes to your opinion:
I still think that you should be willing to die for what you truly believe even though you might
die therefore. Death shouldn’t change your opinion because you are afraid of it.
4. The best way to fight injustice and violence is to speak out against it.
Part 1 Your Opinion:
As I said previously, using the power of words can deeply affect people and is the most
peaceful, yet demanding way for fighting and it is our rights as humans to speak out. To prevent
more dilemma’s we must peacefully negotiate instead of force.
Part 2 Changes to your opinion:
It isn’t the best way as it depends on the situation and how you decide to rise against it.
However, this way of speaking out is much better than starting a war.
