Tutorial-3

1. The relation between the resistance R and the temperature T of a resistance thermometer is
given as R = R0 [1+α(T-T0)], where R0 is the resistance measured in ohms at temperature T 0 (in
o
C) and α is a material constant. The thermometer reads temperatures of 0 oC and 91oC
corresponding to resistance values of 51.39 and 51.72 ohms respectively. What would be the
resistance corresponding to a temperature of 50oC in this thermometer?

2. A new absolute temperature scale is proposed, in which the ice point of water is 150 oS and the
steam point is 300oS. Determine the temperatures in oC that correspond to 100oS and 400oS.

3. A thermometer is constructed by arranging an aluminum rod so that its length can be measured
by using a scale made of a different material [see Figs (a) and (b)]. The thermometer is
calibrated at 0oC and 100oC and the distance between these points is divided uniformly into 100
degrees of equal length on the scale. What is the true temperature when this thermometer reads
40oC? The coefficient of linear expansion of aluminum in this temperature range is 0.2221x10-4
cm/(cm.K) while that of the material of the scale is 10-5cm/(cm.K).

4. A metal rod is 1 m long at 0oC. If the coefficient of linear thermal expansion of the metal is
10-4 + 10-6 T m/m/oC, where T is the temperature in oC, calculate the temperature when the rod
measures 1.01 m length.

5. Determine whether the heat and the work interactions for the following cases are positive or
negative. The system to be considered is shown in italics:
a) The air in a tyre and connected pump. The pump plunger is pushed down, forcing air into
the tyre. Assume pump, tyre and connecting tube to be non-conducting.
b) Steam in a closed vessel at a temperature of 150 oC is left standing in the atmosphere at a
temperature of 25oC.
c) Gas in an insulated cylinder expands as the piston is slowly moved outwards.
d) The water and water vapor in a closed rigid container. The container is set on a stove and
the temperature and pressure of the contents increase.
e) The system in (d) bursts its container and explodes into a cold atmosphere.
f) 1 kg of air flows rapidly from the atmosphere into a previously evacuated bottle.
