The Oil Window
Temperature is the most important factor affecting the generation
of oil and gas from organic matter. Where temperature and time
play an important role in the process of generating oil from
kerogen. Therefore, kerogen that is exposed to a relatively high
temperature for a short period of time will mature to the same
extent that kerogen exposed to a low temperature matures, but
for a long period of time. Therefore, time and temperature
determine the presence and depth at which oil or gas or both can
be generated from kerogen.

Hydrocarbon generation during the maturation phase occurs at

depths between 760 and 4,880 meters at temperatures between
65 °C and 150 °C . This special environment "oil window". In
regions with higher-than-normal ground gradient (increasing
temperature with depth), the oil window at shallower depths of
younger sediments is narrower.

The oil window (Fig1) is an environment characterized by the

temperature range and depth conditions in which hydrocarbons
are formed. In regions with a geothermal gradient of 25 °C per
kilometer, oil appears only at depths of less than 6.5 kilometers.
Gas can be found at greater depths. The length of the
hydrocarbon chains decreases with increasing depth
