Arcs and Inscribed Angles of a Circle

Name of Learner: ___________________________

Grade & Section: ___________________________
Name of School: ___________________________
What I Need to Know

At the end of this module, you should be able to

Proves theorems related to chords, arcs, central angles, and inscribed

angles. (M10GE-IIc-d-1)

Moreover, you are expected to:

1. apply theorems of chords, arcs, and angles of a circle.

What’s In
With circles, geometry becomes at once more interesting and more difficult. Combining
curves and straight lines, circles a create whole new possibilities . A common figure
involving a circle is an inscribed angle.
You have learned that an inscribed angle has its vertex on the circle while
central angle has its vertex at the center of the circle.

Let us find out if you can do the activity below.

1
What’s New
If an inscribed angle of a circle intercepts a semicircle, then the angle is right
angle.

Example1:

In the figure on the right,∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 intercept ̂ 𝐴𝑆𝐶 . If

̂
𝐴𝑆𝐶 is a semicircle, then,∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 is a right angle.

Example 2.

If a quadrilateral is inscribed in a circle, then its opposite angles are

supplementary.

Quadrilateral OVAL is inscribed in ⨀𝑌.

𝑚∠𝑉𝑂𝐿 + 𝑚∠𝑉𝐴𝐿 = 180°.

𝑚∠𝑂𝐿𝐴 + 𝑚∠𝑂𝑉𝐴 = 180°.

What is it

It is important that you can identify an inscribed angle and a central

angle of a circle. It is also equally important to know how to identify and name
the circle’s intercepted arc created by the inscribed angle.
Now , use coordinate geometry to prove that in a circle, an inscribed
angle that intercept a semicircle is a right angle. Study the step by step
two column proof of the theorem that is presented here.

2
Theorem 1: If an inscribed angle of a circle intercepts a semicircle, then the
angle is right angle.
Were you able to follow the steps in proving the proving the theorem ?For
further understanding of proving theorems on the relationships among
inscribed angle and their intercepted arcs, study the proof of the next
theorem. You will learn what a quadrilateral inscribed in a circle is the
inscribed quadrilateral theorem.

Given:
⨀𝑂, ∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 ̂ .
intercepts semicircle𝐴𝑆𝐶
Prove: ∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 is a right angle.

Proof:
Statements Reason
̂
1. ∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 intercepts semicircle𝐴𝑆𝐶 1. Given
̂ = 180°
2. 𝑚𝐴𝑆𝐶 2. The degree measure of a semicircle is
180°
1
̂
3. 𝑚∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 = 𝑚𝐴𝑆𝐶 3.The measure of an inscribed angle is
2
one-half the measure of its intercepted
arc
1
4. 𝑚∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 = (180°) or 𝑚∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 = 90° 4. By substitution
2
5. ∠𝐴𝐵𝐶 is a right angle 5. Definition of right angle

Were you able to follow the steps in proving the theorem? To sharpen
further your understanding of proving theorems on the relationships
among inscribed angle and their intercepted arcs, study the proof of
the next theorem.

Theorem 2: If a quadrilateral is inscribed in a circle, then its opposite

angles are supplementary.

Given: Quadrilateral OVAL is

inscribed in ⨀𝑌.

Prove: ∠𝑂 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠𝐴 are

supplementary

∠𝑉 𝑎𝑛𝑑 ∠𝐿 are supplementary

To prove: Draw ̅̅̅̅ ̅̅̅̅ ,𝐴𝑌,

𝑂𝑌 ,𝑉𝑌 ̅̅̅̅̅ and ̅̅̅̅
𝐿𝑌

3
Proof:

Were you able to follow and understand the presentation of the proofs presented
earlier? In the succeeding sections, you will use these theorems to answer the
following activities.

4
What’s More

Were you able to use the theorems to prove the given activity? I hope you doing
great! In the next section you will still apply the theorems you have studied earlier.

5
