The teachers at the primary level play a very important role in society as they

are largely responsible for moulding the young, impressionable minds. Theses
teachers mainly deal with children in the age group of 4-10 years. Therefore the
nursery and primary school teachers are responsible for the social, emotional
and intellectual growth of children.

The data for trained teachers in primary education in Italy is not available, and
only recent year’s data is available for India. So instead of quantitative
comparison, we will differentiate between the two on the basis of qualitative
factor- the qualitative factor being how primary school teachers are trained in
both the nations.

For becoming a primary school teacher in India, one has to pursue any one of
the courses mentioned – Elementary Teacher Education (ETE) for 2 years,
Bachelor’s in Elementary Education (B.El.Ed) for 4 years or Diploma in
Elementary Education (D.El.Ed) for 2 years.

In Italy, acquiring teacher certification at the elementary and primary levels

requires a university degree in primary school education (Scienze delle
formazione primaria). The degree takes five years to complete and includes 600
hours of internship commencing in the second year. To complete the degree and
certification requirements for teaching at the primary and preprimary levels,
student teachers must prepare a final graduation thesis and a report on their
internship.
Looking at this factor, both the country’s way of training seems sufficient.
