Raising Star Feasibility Report

1 Executive Summary

The Geotechnical Investigations Results Carried Out by Ehyeh Consultancy Services authorized
by the M/s. K&K Consultants, For the Proposed Construction of (G+3) Factory Building at
Sriperumbudur, 602105 for The Raising Star Mobile.

The Standard Penetration Testing for 20 boreholes was drilled at the site up to a maximum depth
of 10.5m, 20.0m & 25.0m below existing ground level.

Based on the borehole information and laboratory test results in addition to the nature of
structure, the pile foundation is recommended for the proposed structure.
Bedrock was not encountered up to a maximum explored depth. Hence, bored Piles shall be
adopted for the proposed structures. The Pile capacities of the bored piles are worked out
considering a depth of 20 m, 15 m and 9 m below ground level as the top of pile level. Estimation
of Pile capacities are given below with reference to the boreholes drilled at site.
PILE CAPACITY CALCULATIONS
Pile Depth (m) Pile Diameter Allowable Pile Lateral load Uplift
(mm) Load Capacity bearing Resistance(kN)
(kN) capacity(kN)
20 600 1590 135.15 770
15 600 1170 99.45 520
9 600 550 46.75 230

2 Problem Statement

The project expenditure depends on the various constrains like quantity of material, execution
machineries requirement and manpower requirement etc.,
The total numbers of piles required for the structure and the pile cap sizes varies to the each of the
depth as the pile at higher depth gives high load carrying capacity and vice versa. The number of
piles depends on the design load of column. As per the design requirement of structure the
adequate numbers of piles and pile caps are arrived for each of the above-mentioned depth of the
pile based on its capacity and compared for its costing to find out the best viable option.

3 Project Design Requirement

PILE GROUPING
The group efficiency shall be worked out based on number of Piles in a group. Piles shall have a
maximum spacing of 2.5 times diameter centre to centre or minimum 1.5 times diameter as clear
spacing in order to mobilise frictional resistance, which is a key factor in achieving better Pile
capacities. Larger spacing is always preferable, in case of bored piles.

K&K CONSULTANTS 5
Raising Star Feasibility Report

PILE GROUP EFFICENCY

Pile group efficiency will depend on the pattern of arrangement of piles and number of piles in a
group. An efficiency of about 60 to 70% shall be considered for the on-site soil condition, in
general. However, it shall be decided based on pile load tests. Sequence of casting of Piles shall
be such that the adjacent Piles do not get affected during Pile drilling. Tremmie concrete shall be
carried out in order to minimise segregation. Water-cement ratio shall also be controlled in order
not to be affected by water, existing inside the Pile boring. Gradual pull out of Pile casing is
necessary, to avoid necking of Piles.
UPLIFT CAPACITY
Uplift capacity of piles shall be considered as 50% of the ultimate frictional capacity of Piles.
PILE TESTING The group efficiency shall be worked out based on number of Piles in a group.
However, Pile load tests are recommended to observe the performance of the Piles and to re-
confirm the theoretical Pile capacities. Load tests to be carried out after a minimum period of 1
week after driving of Pile. minimum 2.5 times the service load on test Piles. A minimum of two
pile load test can be conducted for this project.
FOUNDATION CONSIDERATIONS
A PCC (Plain Cement Concrete) layer of 20cm thickness is recommended below the pile cap /
foundation. Any over excavation in the foundation trenches should be re-filled by plain concrete
and any disturbed and loose materials found in the foundation trenches should be removed before
placement of P.C.C.

4 Assessment of Options
Option 1
20m Notes / Comments

Description of Option 600mm dia pile at 20m depth

Option Evaluation Criteria

Alignment with Desired Business Numbers of piles and sizes of pile caps are lesser than other options. So,
Objectives the execution is faster and shuttering quantity for pile cap required is less
leads to advantage in commercial part.
Technical Fit to Target At 20m the better soil stiffness available as per bore hole data. And the
Enterprise design pile grouping for 20m pile gives more efficiency and execution ease.
Costs Rs 180704177.41
Cost Benefit Rs 7892122.93 less than option 2, Rs 156918849.95 less than option 3
Potential Risks that impact the As since there is a differential soil stratum at overall plot of site, in some
ability to Deliver Desired location the drilling encountered at 9m during test pile execution hence
Business Outcomes high-speed motor equipment shall be used for the drilling the pile.
Rationale for Rejection or for Due to lesser cost and more structural integrity this option is the most
Recommending further Analysis recommended option that suits the proposed structure at this soil
condition.
Overall Viability Most viable.

Raising Star Feasibility Report

Option 2
15m Notes / Comments

Description of Option 600mm dia pile at 15m depth

Option Evaluation Criteria

Alignment with Desired Business Numbers of piles and sizes of pile caps are lesser than options 3 but more
Objectives than option 1. Overall pile running meter is less compared to option 1
saves the cost of pile, but cost of pile cap is higher than option 1.
Technical Fit to Target All the design requirements are satisfied with the 15m deep pile but the
Enterprise design more numbers of piles at single pile group is not a viable option for
execution.
Costs Rs 188596300.34
Cost Benefit Rs 149026727.02 less than option 3
Potential Risks that impact the As since there is a differential soil stratum at overall plot of site, in some
ability to Deliver Desired location the drilling encountered at 9m during test pile execution hence
Business Outcomes high-speed motor equipment shall be used for the drilling the pile.
Rationale for Rejection or for Due to higher cost than option 1 and more numbers of pile shall have
Recommending further Analysis more pile chipping work leads to time delay of work this option is a
rejection option that is not suitable to the proposed structure at this soil
condition.
Overall Viability least viable.

Option 3
9m Notes / Comments

Description of Option 600mm dia pile at 9m depth

Option Evaluation Criteria

Alignment with Desired Business Numbers of piles and sizes of pile caps are higher than other options.
Objectives
Technical Fit to Target More numbers of piles lead to difficulty of pile cap arrangement. All the
Enterprise design material quantity is more than other options
Costs Rs 337623027.36
Cost Benefit nil
Potential Risks that impact the Material requirement and man power requirement is more and leads to
ability to Deliver Desired heavy delay in project with huge loss
Business Outcomes
Rationale for Rejection or for Due to higher cost than other options and more numbers of pile and
Recommending further Analysis huge area of pile cap work shall have more pile chipping work and
shuttering work leads to time delay of work, so this option is a rejection
option that is not suitable to the proposed structure at this soil condition.
Overall Viability Not viable.

5 Risk Assessment of Viable Options

Compared to the above three options the option 1 with 600mm dia pile at 20m is the most viable
option based on both cost and structural integrity of the project. When it comes to 20m the
drilling of pile is going to more challenging job as it has been already encountered during the
execution of test pile. So better supervision with more experienced pile vendor shall be appointed
to execute such crucial job, the vendor should have high speed drilling machines to drill at this
soil strata. This shall be confirmed by the contractor.
